  • How can an innovative financial product leverage private sector investment in the bioeconomy?  In a case study developed by UNEP-WCMC with colleagues at the UN Environment Programme and the IFACC Initiative, we explore how the Conexsus - Instituto Conexões Sustentáveis, Belterra Agroforestry, Grupo Gaia (Brasil) and Santander Green CRA – represents an innovative finance mechanism for land use finance in Brazil.  Having raised BRL 21.5 million (equivalent to USD 3.7 million), the Green CRA supports cooperatives and businesses that want to implement agroforestry systems, restore degraded areas, and use natural resources sustainably.  Read the full case study below. ⤵️ Learn more about this and other tools for sustainable investing on our Land Use Finance Impact Hub: https://lnkd.in/eMAZbf6X #finance #landuse #sustainable #SustainableInvesting #FinanceForNature #privatesector #bioeconomy #agroforestry #restoration

  • 🌍 Empowering Nations to Protect Nature and Build a Sustainable Future 🌱 At UNEP-WCMC, through our National Ecosystem Assessment (NEA) Initiative, we’re working with countries across the globe to bring the latest knowledge on biodiversity and ecosystem services into the decision-making processes of governments, local authorities, and businesses. Why? Because nature is at the heart of food and water security, public health, climate resilience, and the very foundations of our societies and economies. Through the NEA Initiative, we: ✅ Build capacity to bridge the science-policy gap ✅ Facilitate peer-to-peer knowledge exchange ✅ Provide guidance materials in multiple languages ✅ Offer access to experts through both online and in-person platforms With the support of UNDP , UNESCO , and Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Network (BES-Net) , the NEA Initiative has created a positive impact in 5 countries, for example: 🌟 In Vietnam, NEA findings are shaping environmental protection laws and strategies. 🌟 In Cameroon, the NEA contributed to their 6th National Report to the Convention on Biological Diversity. We’re here to continue supporting nations every step of the way to tackle the biodiversity crisis and achieve a sustainable future for the people and planet. • On the occasion of World Wetlands Day 2025, we present key insights about wetland ecosystems from Malawi’s National Ecosystem Assessment Scoping Report. This report is based on consultations with various stakeholders and knowledge holders and outlines the proposed approach and action plan for assessing wetland ecosystems in the country. Significantly, it identifies several key policy questions that the assessment aims to address regarding wetlands. Wetlands are crucial to Malawi's economy, the livelihoods of local communities, and food security. Dr. Lilian Chimphepo, Co-chair of the Malawi National Ecosystem Assessment, highlights that wetlands in the country provide a diverse range of ecosystem services essential for human well-being and the environment, benefiting both current and future generations of Malawians. However, a more comprehensive understanding of the benefits wetlands provide is vital for shaping policy direction for their sustainable management. With technical support from UNEP-WCMC’s National Ecosystem Assessment Initiative and international partners from the BES-Net consortium, Malawi’s National Ecosystem Assessment will generate evidence-based knowledge on the status of wetlands. This includes their economic contributions, their role in community resilience, and their significance in climate change adaptation and mitigation. • How can financial products help accelerate restoration of degraded pasturelands in Brazil and reduce ecosystem conversion?  Renova Pasto is showcased in a case study developed by UNEP-WCMC, with colleagues at the UN Environment Programme and the IFACC Initiative. This standardised loan product, developed by AGRI3 Fund, Rabobank and IDH, combines long tenor loans with Deforestation and Conversion Free (DCF) commitments and technical assistance. Renova Pasto loans have helped restore over 1600 ha of natural ecosystems. An additional 1700 ha of degraded land has been rehabilitated, reducing pressure for the expansion of pasturelands into natural habitats.  Read the full case study below. ⤵️ Learn more about this and other tools for sustainable investing on our Land Use Finance Impact Hub: https://lnkd.in/eMAZbf6X

  • What are the impacts of offshore wind projects on marine migratory species? In a review conducted by biodiversity experts at UNEP-WCMC, we explore the range of positive and negative impacts of offshore wind energy developments on migratory underwater species - including whales, porpoises, seals, crustaceans and various other fish. With offshore wind developments expected to significantly multiply by 2030, there is an urgent need to understand their impacts and how the potential negative issues can be mitigated as much as possible.
