🔥 UK General Election: climate action on the ballot? ✅️ My Thursday to-do list: - Wish a happy birthday to my nieces - Vote - Plan to pull an all-nighter to watch the results live (most likely fall asleep on the sofa) 🛟 Under the current voting age, my nieces will vote for the first time in 2034 and 2040. The winner of this week’s UK election will play a major role in determining what life is like for them in the future. Clean air? Affordable, clean energy? Water that is safe to drink and swim in? 🌍 With global warming predicted to be 2°C above pre-industrial levels by the 2030s and possibly 2.5°C by the 2050s, the stakes could not be higher for voters. 📱Yet according to YouGov, environment and climate change has not been a top 3 issue for most UK voters this time around (with the exception of those aged 18-24). 🌡️ Individuals, campaign groups, and NGOs have been working hard to keep climate on candidates’ agendas, to tackle dis- and misinformation, and to make the connection between voters’ priorities (e.g. the cost of living) and climate change. They have also been encouraging people to actually turn up on election day (33% of registered voters in the 2019 UK general election stayed at home). 📑 At Impatience Earth we have combed through some of the resources produced by these groups, including analysis of party manifestos (see below). ❗UK voters: if climate action is a top issue for you, and you are undecided or unmotivated ahead of the election this Thursday, take a look at some of the following resources. And a reminder that polling stations are open from 7am-10pm on Thursday 4th July (+ you must bring a valid form of photo ID to cast your vote.) ℹ️ From Carbon Brief: an interactive tracker of the energy & climate commitments made by major political parties in their latest election manifestos. https://lnkd.in/dPCj3na5 ℹ️ From Friends of the Earth: type in your postcode to see what the ‘state of the environment’ is in your local area https://lnkd.in/dkW6wSvw ℹ️ From Greenpeace: find the ‘tactical voting’ section on their website to find out if your area is a close race between the two leading parties, and which option is your preferred from those most in with a chance of winning. https://lnkd.in/d8xvF4MNImpatience Earth 's team of experienced climate and philanthropy experts provides pro-bono advisory services to corporate foundations, private foundations, and high net worth individuals. How does climate change impact the LGBTQIA+ community, and what does it mean for philanthropy? 🏳️🌈 As #PrideMonth draws to a close at Impatience Earth we have created a special ‘Easy Digest’ exploring climate change from an LGBTQIA+ perspective. Our research revealed that: 🌪️ LGBTQIA+ people are already more vulnerable to climate change which can increase marginalisation and thus vulnerability in disasters and in environments such as emergency shelters. LGBTQIA+ people are statistically more likely to be on lower incomes and homeless. These factors in turn put them at greater risk of exposure to climate-related issues such as air pollution and extreme weather events that are increasing due to climate change. 🆘 When climate action and response planning does not take into account the specific vulnerabilities of a group, it is unlikely that their needs will be met before, during or after a disaster. Only six countries in 2021 included LGBTQIA+ people in their official policies related to disaster preparedness, response or recovery. 🧠 LGBTQIA+ people are also more likely to suffer from poor mental health, and the added burden of eco-anxiety can put them at greater risk of mental illness 🌈 Rainbow-washing crops up every year during Pride Month, and campaigners have highlighted that while corporates do take action to support the LGBTQIA+ community, many simultaneously profit from activities that make the queer community more vulnerable. For example, Barclays was one of the biggest Pride in London sponsors, yet it also financed more fossil fuel projects than any of the UK’s largest banks in the months leading up to COP26. What does this all mean for climate philanthropy? ➡️ Funders should apply an intersectional lens to their work to recognise the queer community’s unique risks from climate change.  ➡️ Philanthropy is more risk-tolerant, and so can support groups that advocate for more inclusive climate policies and individual campaigners who call out issues such as 'rainbow-washing’ ➡️ Funders should look to support queer-led organisations, capacity building, advocating for gender and LGBTQIA+ supportive policies and amplify queer climate voices in the sector, for example at climate panel events. ➡️ Queer solutions to the climate crisis should be part of every funder’s strategy. Examples such as PermaQueer and GiveOut’s Climate Fund show how impact can be increased by supporting solutions from the LGBTQIA+ community. Our thanks to George Harding-Rolls for supporting this work. At the Golden Bottle Trust (GBT), the Hoare family uses a philanthropic profiling tool called Care4Most (www.care4most.org) to establish which causes mean the most to family members. Recently, the GBT’s focus on environmental projects intensified, with the funding target rising from 11% in 2018 to 20% in 2022. To maximise its impact, the GBT partnered with Impatience Earth to develop an 'ecosystem granting' strategy. This approach uses multiple smaller grants to address the interconnected nature of environmental issues, supporting solutions from the planting and preservation of seagrass to regenerative agriculture. Learn more about our approach in the latest Golden Bottle Trust report: https://lnkd.in/etPSUZbU #GoldenBottleTrust #Philanthropy #Sustainability #EnvironmentalImpact #Totalportfolioimpact
