What innovative approaches can we adopt to make our Monitoring & Evaluation processes truly inclusive and reflective of community needs? How do we ensure that feedback from those impacted drives the success of our development initiatives? 🌱 🎤 At InsightShare we believe it's time to pass the mic. That's why we collaborated with Kerk in Actie, Cordaid and local organisations in Kenya to address this issue! The Shared Futures initiative intervenes in contexts where political actors prey on economic hardships to incite interfaith tensions and religious extremism. We advised the programme on how to incorporate Participatory Video as a Monitoring and Evaluation tool. We ensured that we delivered contextually relevant skills promoting conflict resolution, meaningful peace and sustainable reconciliation 🕊 The Shared Futures participants documented how the project impacted their lives and shared their stories of change. Today, the 12th of October, marks Spain’s national holiday. This day is also when Columbus arrived on Guanahani island, now known as San Salvador. Our newest blog delves into the controversy surrounding this celebration 🌎 🧶 By weaving into her analysis Anibal Quijano’s concept of coloniality of power and the practice of “vivir adentro y en contra”, Selina Fernandez Rumeu interrogates this day’s history. What does it mean for Spain to glorify, exalt and celebrate the 12th of October as one of national pride, and what alternative days could serve as new symbols of national identity? In her blog, she also explores how numerous Latin American countries have changed the day to memorialise Indigenous resistance and support cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue. 📍Read here: https://lnkd.in/eRCkBmQ5 #Indigenous #Quijano #coloniality #colonialityofpower #power #resistance #Spain #12October #12deoctubre #DiadelaHispanidad #Hispanidad

Globally, women earn at least 20% less than men. But when you factor in multiple identities—being Black, Indigenous, a woman of color, disabled, or queer — the wage gap widens even more. #Intersectionality matters in the fight for pay equity. At InsightShare, we value the importance of equal pay. This is Irene’s ‘story of change’ following the interventions made by the RISE programme, devised by Opportunity International, in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda. Irene Ndusi is a mother of five and a widow after losing her husband in the war in Congo. She and her family fled the country in 2020 and travelled to the Nakivale Refugee Camp in Uganda. At first, Irene relied on World Food Programme (WFP) distributions to cover her family’s basic subsistence needs.    Soon after, the WFP started distributing cash transfers in the camp, and Irene joined the Family Savings Group, where members pool their cash assistance together. After some time, she was able to buy a sewing machine and started using her tailoring skills to complement her income. Thanks to the group, Irene also received training in #financial #literacy, #saving, investing, and managing #loans. She decided to give back to her community by teaching widows, mothers, and orphans her sewing craft to support other women and girls' financial agency, freedom, and well-being. We hope to inspire development practitioners and gender equality activists to continue working towards economic autonomy, financial literacy and gender equality through powerful community-based initiatives like the Family Savings Group. These goals are within reach for women and girls worldwide, and stories like Irene’s show us the path to achieving them. 📹 Watch the full video here:  https://lnkd.in/eH6DdBmi #Intersectionality #EqualPay #PayEquity #CloseTheWageGap #finance #refugee #freedom #sewing #Nakivale

“Leaving our traditions, we become slaves.” Today, as part of our Indigenous Solutions campaign, we want to spotlight the Mweria tradition. Mweria is an ancient practice of the Mijikenda people of coastal Kenya that echoes the traditions of many Indigenous cultures globally. Known as a Rotating Labour Association it is a group of community members who agree to help each other cultivate their land in return for the same commitments later. This tradition of reciprocal exchange depends on groups of people or Chamas pooling together resources and labour. When the community comes together to help someone, the person receiving Mweria gives the community group vouchers, which they can redeem when they are in need of the community’s help. In this participatory video, the participants outline how they have individually and collectively benefited from the revival of this practice - from eradicating hunger and poverty, building trust and sharing knowledge about farming the land. 📼 Watch the full video here: https://lnkd.in/dcaKgcHg

On Tuesday our team hosted a farewell lunch at Southbank for Tania Ocampo-García, as she is leaving us to start her PhD at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Thankfully she’ll stay with us in the capacity of associate 🌞✨ The topic of conversation went from how spicy we can tolerate food, whether Paddington is the best British film, and our experiences working in hospitality (we had many stories) 🌶️ ☕️ 🐻 In all seriousness, Tania’s PhD research tackles the critical issue of social inequality in coastal urban environments vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Through participatory methods, she will delve into the pressing topic in her home town in Mexico, bringing to light the human dimensions of environmental vulnerability. Do give her a follow on LinkedIn and keep up with her work! If you want a teaser of her work, in her most recent blog for us she reflects on ‘doing development differently’, the importance of Indigenous knowledge and local participation in just transitions and the task of decolonising oneself. Read here: https://lnkd.in/ef8SyYpH She’ll be greatly missed at InsightShare. Good luck PhDing, LSE is lucky to have you!

Project update 📢 In 2022, we joined forces with the Environmental Management and Economic Development Organisation (EMEDO) to launch The Lake Victoria Drowning Prevention Project. Fishing in Tanzania can be very hazardous. Fishers work alone or in small groups, often with no protective or communication equipment. As many can't swim, this can prove to be a fatal combination. The Project supports local fishers who use the lake, mainly for their work. Since launching, we've been working with the local communities to learn how the drowning prevention interventions that have been put in place are affecting them. Phoebe Chipchase, Monitoring Evaluation and Learning Adviser, from our International team recently travelled to Ukerewe, Lake Victoria: 'I spent a week working with EMEDO, and a social enterprise called InsightShare on a six-day participatory video project. The purpose was to understand the changes that local communities have made in relation to drowning prevention since the start of The Lake Victoria Drowning Prevention Project.' Whilst there, Phoebe filmed this update for us 👇 For more details on our use of participatory video for this project click the link: https://bit.ly/3M2ojL5 #RNLI #Innovation #DrowningPrevention #PartnershipWorking #EMEDO

On the night of the 22nd and 23rd of August 1791, slaves held an uprising against French colonial rule in Saint Domingue, modern-day Haiti and the Dominican Republic. On that night, the Haitian Revolution started. This rebellion was a watershed moment for the abolitionist movement worldwide. Today marks the International Day of the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. At InsightShare, we want to take this day to commemorate the slaves who suffered from the worst form of torture and exploitation. We challenge the false narratives that colonialism is a relic of the past and shed light on uninterrupted colonial legacies.  Decolonisation is an ongoing process that strives for cultural revival, and social, environmental and economic justice. With this in mind, we are sharing a participatory video from our BREATHE! project, which brought young Black and ethnically diverse people together to explore colonial histories, diasporan identities and heritage through studying African collections in European museums. In this video, Uwagbale Edward-Ekpu, a journalist and researcher, and Ashley Coutu from The Pitt Rivers Museum reflect on the stolen Ebo “artefacts” kept in the museum. They discuss how to disrupt these colonial legacies, the repatriation of these objects for healing, repair and cultural revival, and how to integrate the communities affected into conversations and repatriation efforts.
