About us

Doing business ethically, makes for better business The IBE was established in 1986 to encourage high standards of business behaviour based on ethical values. Our vision is to lead the dissemination of knowledge and good practice in business ethics. We raise public awareness of the importance of doing business ethically and collaborate with other UK and international organisations with interests and expertise in business ethics. We help organisations to strengthen their ethics culture and encourage high standards of business behaviour based on ethical values. We offer practical and confidential advice on ethical issues, policy, implementation, support systems and codes of ethics, helping organisations to provide guidance to staff and build relationships of trust with their principal stakeholders. Our team apply their practical business experience of the issues that organisations face to fulfil the Institute's vision and mission. Our activities include: • Delivering training in business ethics for board members, staff and employees • Providing a neutral and confidential forum for the discussion of current issues and to facilitate the sharing of good practice • Undertaking research and surveys into good practice and ethical business conduct • Publishing practical reports to help identify solutions to business dilemmas • Supporting business education in the delivery of business ethics in the curriculum • Offering the media and others informed opinion on current issues and good practice.

  • IBE’s Ethics at Work 2024 country reports are now out! This triennial survey of employees in 16 countries provides valuable insights into ethical leadership and culture. An ethics programme is not just a tick box exercise – it is a vital part of good organisational culture. As part of IBE’s Ethics at Work 2024 survey, we asked employees about their awareness of four building blocks of an ethics programme. Employees in India and the USA are generally more aware of all four building blocks than those in Portugal and Spain, although awareness has increased in both countries since the 2021 survey. Comparing the results of employees’ line manager’s ethical commitment in Australia, Brazil, Germany and New Zealand: ‘My line manager sets a good example of ethical business behaviour’ ⬆ Employees in Australia, Brazil and New Zealand are above the global average in agreeing with this statement. ⬇Germany is below the global average. ‘My line manager explains the importance of ethics in the work we do’. ⬆ Employees in Australia, Brazil and Germany are above the global average in agreeing with this statement. ⬇New Zealand is below the global average. ‘My line manager supports me in following my organisation’s standards of ethical behaviour’ ⬆ Employees in Australia, Brazil and New Zealand are above the global average in agreeing with this statement. ⬇Germany is below the global average.     With numerous corporate scandals making news headlines this year, one question comes to my mind - "were there no warning signs?" The simple answer is that quite often there are. Harry Wallop's column in The Times, draws on our Ethics at Work 2024 survey research findings at the Institute of Business Ethics to illustrate how whistleblowers are frequently being ignored. Harry concludes by challenging business leaders investigating whistleblowing cases to ask themselves "Are we sure this is okay? Because often it is not"

  • Investigating ‘how managers at many British institutions seem to have become adept at brushing workplace scandals under the carpet rather than listening to whistleblowers’, Harry Wallop highlights the IBE’s Ethics at Work 2024 survey report in his recent article for The Times.   Are we seeing ‘ethics in crisis’ or changes in expectations and increased visibility of misdemeanours? The Ethics at Work 2024 report points out that a global average of 63% of the 12,000 surveyed employees are prepared to speak up when they notice misconduct in their organisation – and that a global average of 71% are satisfied with the outcome after speaking up.   There is more to do and, as recent scandals have shown, organisations need to ensure that employees are free to voice their concerns without fearing inaction, jeopardising their jobs, being alienated from colleagues - without retaliation.   Read the report - https://lnkd.in/dHyaM-Sm   Let us know if you have any comments or would like more information – info@ibe.org.uk   #businessethics #EthicsAtWork #IBESurvey

    Sure, most large organizations and companies have a code of ethics or a similar program, but do employees truly believe in it? What about asking 12,000 employees in 16 countries? This is what the Institute of Business Ethics did in its international 2024 Ethics at Work Survey and it shows quite encouraging trends even though substantial challenges are still there. You should check the full survey (a lot of good stuff for any ethics-related training or presentation) but my top findings are: 👍 Employees report increased familiarity with ethics resources, including confidential reporting (61%) and access to advice/hotlines (53%), up significantly since 2021. 👍 Misconduct awareness rose to 25% in 2024, with issues like sexual harassment and bribery remaining top concerns. 👍 More employees are willing to speak up to report misconduct (64%, up from 57% in 2021) ... 👎 ... meaning a third of those who were aware of misconduct did not report it, mainly because they feared for their job or that no corrective action would be taken (both reasons at 34%, with no change since 2021). 👎 The top two kinds of pressure leading to unethical behavior are "I was following my boss's orders" and "unreasonable deadlines". 👎 Female and younger employees often report less favorable ethics experiences.
