This piece was co-written by Dr Kathryn Maitland, lead of the IGHI’s Centre of African Research and Engagement (ICCARE), in relation to azithromycin, an antibiotic used to treat trachoma and other diseases in children in Africa. Trachoma is the world's leading infectious cause of blindness. The piece reflects on current evidence from the so-called “for Life” Trial and related concerns about a potential increase in antibiotic resistance linked to the mass distribution of azithromycin. Nevertheless, the antibiotic also showed to have a dramatic effect on all cause childhood mortality. Last week, we hosted our first Global Health Summer School for 22 Year-13 students from schools across London at Imperial's South Kensington campus. The week-long programme was devised and organised by Ann-Sophie Pieters, IGHI Operations Officer, Holly Merton, Julia Anderson Trainee - Cohort 6, and Steve McAteer, IGHI Director of Operations and Global Health. We are excited to share the latest outcome from the Networked Data Lab project! The Networked Data Lab is a group of analytical teams across the UK using data to help system leaders understand how to improve health and care in our communities. Last year, we invited patients and carers from North West London to get involved in our work on intermediate care services. These incredible individuals have been working closely with our research team to better understand who receives intermediate care in North West London and how this care impacts hospital readmissions. We are thrilled to announce that we have developed a video discussing the insights and findings from this project. This video features one of the carers who was involved and showcases the collaborative efforts to improve healthcare services in our community. We also partnered with Healthwatch Westminster and Healthwatch Kensington & Chelsea, who spoke to patients and carers about their intermediate care experiences to explore themes such as the involvement of patients and carers in decision making and the quality and continuity of care received. Students on our MSc Healthcare and Design investigated the design of an innovative Imperial Breast Unit which responds to patient needs ⭐ Mr Daniel Leff, consultant breast surgeon at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and programme lead for the MSc Healthcare and Design, who led the team of designers, clinicians and patients on this project said: "I'm delighted to see such a significant outcome of student work, and a positive change for the patients."
