Today’s video message comes to you from onboard a ferry as Kuba travels from Dover to Calais. Meanwhile a team of InterManager members, including our Vice President, are attending Seatrade Crew Connect Global in Manila. A great deal of work is being undertaken at present: Capt. Paddy McKnight is preparing a comment paper for the IMO on Lifeboat Safety; Capt. Garry Hallett attended an Enclosed Space Meeting organised by OCIMF where he presented InterManager’s latest safety statistics; and Kuba has been in touch with two ship management companies who are dealing with cases of alleged criminalisation of seafarers in Turkey. Capt. Garry Hallett collates the fall and enclosed space accidents for InterManager and have come across the below accident , which has also been reproduced on the website, as shown below https://lnkd.in/e3UNeBJF This is an interesting one, and I am not 100% sure if its an actual incident or something someone has made up for effect. I have approached the owners of the site but they are refusing to comment other than it happened sometime between 2015 and 2020 and a NDA was signed between the ship owner/ manager and the family of the cadet. Do you have any insight into the alleged accident please, The ships name , The date would be very helpful and also enable others to learn from this tragic event. QUOTE On a cargo vessel, a group of deck crew, including a Bosun, two Able Seamen (ABs), two Ordinary Seamen (OSs), were assigned to clean Ballast Tank 2A. It was a usual task, carried out with the expected safety precautions. Around the afternoon, a deck cadet, who had already completed his duty on the bridge, unexpectedly joined the crew. The cadet came and went intermittently, spending time in the tank and stepping out several times. As it became common for him to come and go, the crew grew accustomed to his presence and did not notice when he last left. Incident: By 5 p.m., believing that everyone had safely exited the tank, the crew sealed the ballast tank. At 6 p.m., the crew noticed the cadet did not show up for dinner, a small but seemingly insignificant detail at the time. At 8 p.m., when the cadet failed to report for his bridge duty with the third officer, the crew began to worry. By 8:30 p.m., panic set in as they realized the cadet was missing. The last known location? The ballast tank, now tightly sealed for hours. Tragic Discovery: Rushing to open the ballast tank, the crew feared the worst. Their fears were confirmed. The cadet was found lifeless inside, trapped and unable to call for help. He had been alone in the dim, compartmentalized tank, likely calling out in vain as his oxygen dwindled. Unquote It came from the shipping news website, unfortunately no ship / date / company hence in the narrative section until i can verify it. It also appears here https://lnkd.in/eSeRx25Z
