This post is a tribute to the outstanding contributions of Mr Ole Christian Schrøder to INTERTANKO. Since his election as Chair of the Environmental Committee in 2019, Ole has played a pivotal role in navigating the committee through a dynamic and challenging landscape, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Under his leadership, the committee has produced key industry guidance, including INTERTANKO’s first ESG Guide, documents on Regional Ballast and Biofouling requirements, Electronic Record Books, and significant contributions to the IBTS issue, including numerous submissions to IMO. Beyond his role as Chair, Ole has been a valued voice in the INTERTANKO Delegation at IMO meetings, including the Pollution Prevention and Response subcommittee (PPR) and the Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC). His expertise and perspective have proven key to his roles as Vice Chair of the North American Panel and as a representative on the INTERTANKO Council. Ole’s contributions have been substantial in every capacity he has served, and his positive impact on INTERTANKO and the broader industry has been invaluable. As he embarks on new ventures, we extend our sincere gratitude for his dedication, insight, and leadership. We wish him continued success in all his future endeavours. Thank You Ole!

Late last month, the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) published the results of its Section 301 investigation into China’s maritime, logistics and shipbuilding practices, and announced proposals to impose exorbitant service fees on Chinese-built and Chinese-registered vessels calling at U.S. ports, and export quotas to promote the transport of U.S. goods on U.S. flagged vessels. Catch INTERTANKO Managing Director Tim Wilkins speaking about the impact of the USTR on the tanker sector on Monday, 10th March 2025, at 12:00 GMT. Shipping organisations increasingly concerned about seafarer safety The chairpersons of the world’s biggest shipping industry organisations gathered on 6 February in Athens to discuss topics including greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction and the impact of geopolitics on shipping. By far the most important topic on the agenda was how the industry, and the international community, can help limit and put an end to a rise in unjust treatment and criminalisation of its seafarers. INTERTANKO Managing Director Tim Wilkins shines a light on the regulatory gap that could stall the growth of CO2 transport by sea—an essential piece of the carbon capture and storage puzzle. While the EU focuses on intra-regional transport, concerns are mounting over limited storage capacity, making cross-border CO2 shipping necessary. Without clear regulations, investment in this emerging sector could be at risk. Can shipping offer the flexibility pipelines lack? And will policymakers step up in time?
