New short article on the youth vote (18-24) at the 2024 General Election by Matt Henn and myself for the excellent Election Analysis 2024 report with an amazing array of other academic authors. In it we describe: 1. The 'youthquake' in support for the progressive parties (especially amongst young women and students - 23% of young women voted Green!). 2. The collapse of the Conservative vote (from 30% in 2010, to 20% in 2019 to 8% in 2024). 3. Youth support for Labour (41%) as 'shallow' - a significant amount of young people (16%) migrated to the Greens and Lib Dems through the campaign. 4. Decrease in support for Labour + Conservatives combined - from over three-quarters in 2019 (76%) to under a half (49%) in 2024. We attribute Labour's shallow support amongst young people as a failure to communicate (centre-stage) with young people over what the policies in the manifesto e.g. Green jobs, Young Futures hubs, would mean to them as well as a failure to develop a cohesive youth offer e.g. housing, mental health, the environment, youth services. The challenge now is to strategize, deliver and communicate a more effective youth offer in government. James Dennis Darren Lilleker Lee Jerome Nick Anstead Rosie Campbell Ana Isabel Nunes . Youth vote in GE2024. 1. Labour victory driven by collapse in youth (18-24s) vote for the Conservatives (8% -12points) and stunning youth support for progressive parties (80%) (Labour, 47%, LibDem 15%, Green 14%, SNP 3%, Plaid 2%). 2. Youthquake in progressive vote rippled up generations against government policy on austerity, Brexit, climate crisis, Covid, cost of living etc. and lack of action everyday issues such as mental health, pollution and housing. 13% of 25-49s voted Conservative and 70% progressive. 3. 90% of young women (18-34) voted for progressive parties. Huge increase in 18-24s vote for Greens (14%) & Plaid (25% in Wales). But the challenge , of course, is deliver for younger generations in government! More from Matt Henn & I on this topic next week.
