About us

We are Jöttnar. We make technical clothing for climbing, skiing and adventure. Jöttnar was born in Arctic Norway and is the creation of two former Royal Marine commandos. We’re lifelong mountaineers, climbers and skiers, and that DNA runs deep in the company. We run Jöttnar, we design the gear ourselves and we personally test it. We don’t follow fabric trends and we have no need to follow retail trends. We design the gear we want to wear. Our professional athletes then help us test it to destruction.

REHABILITATION THROUGH ADVENTURE 65 Degrees North is an organisation close to our heart. It supports the rehabilitation of wounded, injured and sick service personnel, as well as veterans. The outdoors is at the centre of what they do, using wilderness expeditions to challenge the mind and body of their beneficiaries. These experiences and achievements change lives for the better, aiding and enhancing recovery and, just as importantly, inspiring other service personnel damaged in combat. As military veterans ourselves, and with friends over the years who have benefitted from the care and support of 65 Degrees North, it’s a privilege for us to be able to play a small role here. Our partnership will involve fundraising, expedition support and clothing provision.

Ex-Special Forces | Coach To Founders & CEOs | Master Your Mindset To Go From ‘Average’ To Unstoppable

The cold is colder. The distances are further. The dark nights are just that little bit darker. Life as a Mountain Leader (ML) in the Royal Marine Commandos. The unwritten rule when you pass selection for Special Forces… No matter what you’ve achieved in your previous military career you’re on an equal footing. There is one exception to this. Mountain Leaders (ML’s). The ML branch of the Royal Marines represent the pinnacle of professional soldiering. They stand apart. Even in the world of Special Forces, if you’ve been an ML you set the standard. I spent the day climbing Commando Ridge with Tommy Kelly. Ex-ML and co-founder of the outdoor clothing brand Jottnar. From surviving in the arctic to Afghanistan, hunting Al Qaeda in the Hindu Kush. For 15 years Tommy served at the sharp end. When I asked ex-ML Tommy Kelly (co-founder of Jottnar) what makes the branch stand apart this is what he had to say; “The ability to persevere to quite extraordinary levels in hostile environments. To just keep going, keep operating and stay on task no matter the odds. That is the hallmark of the Mountain Leader branch.” If you want to know what it takes to be the 1% of the 1% then watch the full video on The Natural Edge YT channel. There are many ways that we, as a team, believe we can continue to stand out in the industry. Besides the activities that are included in our packages… Besides the decades of experience in high performing environments that our team posses collectively, including that within Mountain Leader Training Cadre of the Royal Marine Commandos as well as top tier professional sports… It’s largely down to meticulousness Attention to detail Care Passion Continuously controlling key controllables such as good communication, paperwork, administration, planning, preparation, punctuality, reflection, adaptation and, of course, listening to our customers and hearing what they have to say about ways in which we can improve. Holding ourselves accountable on a journey of continuous growth and betterment. We also see value and importance in networking too We’re constantly building relationships with organisations that we trust and believe will add to the experience of our customers Our partnership with Jöttnar is a great example of that A brand that we not only wear ourselves, but one that we highly recommend to those we work with because we’ve seen firsthand how robust and resilient their equipment is within the environment in which it’s been designed for If you’re interested in learning new skills and taking your mountaineering experience to the next level… Whether it be skills you’d like to learn and develop for your own future use, or perhaps you want to get out of your comfort zone through experiencing an exciting and adventurous activity… get in touch We have lots of events coming up Some private… and others open to the public Either way, drop us a private message or email: info@cadre-group.com #mountaineering #mountainleader #getoutside #getoutdoors #yomp #hiking #snowdonia #eryri #ogwenvalley

    Director and Co-Founder at Jöttnar

As a non limelight type person, my first response to the idea that I appear on a podcast was a resounding ‘no way.’ I’m glad I did it though. I'm a verbal scattergun, but Alex Chisnall guided the conversation through my first career as a Royal Marine, via combat tours of Afghanistan and Iraq, qualifying into the elite Mountain Leader Cadre and then leaving to co-found the mountain clothing company, Jöttnar. I hesitated to talk about what’s been the toughest couple of years for me, 2021-23, although the words began coming out anyway. Loss, pain, disorientation and ultimately leaving the office during a routine weekly meeting last summer, certain that my time with Jöttnar was over, is the short version.  The longer version includes a story about wearing the same pair of socks for 51 days, the almost comedic dysfunction of an early-stage business and why the words, ‘mankind’s nemesis’ appear next to a picture of my face. https://lnkd.in/edtD__rV Dr Rachael Kelly Lorna Kelly Royal Marines

Alone in Antarctica | LEGEND Magazine Recently, I was asked by the team at Jöttnar to write a short piece on my attempted solo unsupported ski crossing of Antarctica for their Legend Magazine. It's the first time I've written down my feelings about the expedition since returning almost four months ago. In all honesty, it was difficult to start writing this article as the expedition is still relatively raw in my mind but I found the whole process quite cathartic. While hard, both physically and mentally, the expedition was incredibly rewarding. It was not easy to succinctly discuss the overwhelming emotions I experienced, to describe the indescribable views I witnessed, or to express how much I wanted a cold tin of Fanta but this article is my attempt to summarise the bewildering continent of Antarctica. For an insight into one man’s journey into extreme isolation, physical exhaustion, mental fortitude, and the power of mindset to stay motivated and disciplined, give the article a read. https://lnkd.in/ezNMvDgw Thank you to Jöttnar for your support on the expedition. Trusting that my clothing would protect me from the harsh conditions while skiing gave me a huge piece of mind. #Antarctica #ConquerGiants #Resilience

Filming for an upcoming YouTube episode, delving into the mindset of a former Royal Marines mountain leader. This branch of the British military is arguably its most elite, containing only 80 men, yet remains relatively unknown. What better place to explore the mindset of these incredibly humble individuals than the hallowed turf at Bosigran, where the original commandos trained for D-Day nearly 80 years ago. Captured in such a brutal yet stunning location. Rising straight out of the Atlantic, Commando Ridge is a wild and atmospheric route. Almost alpine in its length and style, but very much Cornish in the crashing surf and shrieking seagulls. Over 80 years ago, raiding craft would deliver commandos in darkness to its base and the small teams would then quickly and quietly ascend the ridge. They'd go on to repeat this along the coastline of occupied Europe, engaging a live enemy at the top. It's good to follow in these foot and hand holds and to remember. As the plaque at the top more pithily says, "On this ridge commando soldiers were trained in rock climbing in the years 1940-1945." Film coming soon...
