👋 We are delighted to welcome to the JCF team Isobel Allen as a Senior Policy Officer and Ruby Kalms as an intern supporting on CALF legal research. 🔹 Izzy brings a wealth of relevant expertise and a deep passion for the mission of the Coller Foundation. With a background as a small-animal vet, she has also gained valuable experience working at Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and ShareAction, focusing on animal health policy and biodiversity policy respectively. Izzy will be instrumental in developing our UK and international policy activities across JCF. 🔹 Ruby, recently called to the Bar, joins us before beginning her pupillage. Her extensive expertise and training will bring great strengths to our CALF initiative. Ruby's work will focus on the current UK laws and regulations related to animal welfare, food safety and other aspects of factory farming. It's great to have you on board 😊

🔑 JCF recently had the privilege of participating in the 2024 edition of the PLP China-Europe Programme in Beijing. This event provided a unique opportunity to delve into the history and development of the philanthropic landscapes in both China and Europe, exploring topics such as building credibility in philanthropy through combining collaboration, strategy, and leadership, as well as the impact of new technologies on civil society. Despite differing political and economic contexts, we identified common challenges and opportunities between China and Europe and reflected on innovative solutions to resolve shared SDG issues. 🙏 A special thank you to Stiftung Mercator GmbH, China Foundation Forum and Philea - Philanthropy Europe Association for financing and organising this programme, making it a reality. We also extend our gratitude to Jeff Zhou at Compassion in World Farming China, Mrs Xi Chunling and Jocelyn from International Cooperation Committee of Animal Welfare and Melinda Hou from the Good Food Fund China for taking the time to meet us over dinner during this busy week. It was a pleasure to hear your perspective and insights on the animal welfare and alternative protein sectors in China. 🎯 Despite the complex political landscape for civil society in China over the last decades, it is thanks to individuals like you that the policy-making process is gradually opening up and allowing for the friendly participation of NGOs in the area of animal protection. 💡 JCF left Beijing feeling hopeful for the future, deeply inspired by the resilience and creativity of Chinese civil society actors who are working tirelessly across diverse issues to create a better future for all.

JCF are pleased to share insights from our recent consultation response to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs' 'consultation on fairer food labelling'! 🌱🍽️ We delved into the crucial areas of Country of Origin and Method of Production #labelling, advocating for clearer information to empower consumers and support animal welfare. - Since mandatory #egg labelling was implemented in 2004, there's been a remarkable shift in consumer awareness and market dynamics. With increased transparency, the market share of free-range eggs has surged from less than 30% in 2004 to over 60% in 2023. Yet, while eggs boast mandatory labelling, many other animal products lack this essential transparency. - Our policy asks aim to make it easier for consumers to choose products that align with their values, while also rewarding farmers who exceed baseline welfare standards. - Our guiding principles for labelling reform prioritise evidence-based approaches, collaboration across the supply chain, and simplicity for consumers. Additionally, we advocate for stringent regulations governing national flags on meat packaging, ensuring accurate representation of origin and rearing location. We eagerly await Defra’s response and anticipate providing consumers with the necessary information to make informed choices and champion ethical practices in the food industry. Stay tuned to the Defra website for our comprehensive consultation response! #FoodLabelling #AnimalWelfare #ConsumerEmpowerment 🔗 https://lnkd.in/emCeskbs
