This week marks one year of BNG’s ‘go live’ date and there has already been a remarkable impact on halting biodiversity loss. At Joe’s Blooms we are pleased to have captured some of this progress in a new report out this week looking at the role of small sites in particular. The analysis of 12,000 use cases and 100 detailed case studies clearly shows that digital tools are making a success of the small sites metric, and are essential in supporting the Government to achieve its national biodiversity targets. Some highlights include: ⏰ Many applications taking place in as little as 45 minutes  📈 Small sites often go beyond the required 10% uplift, with two thirds of these producing a net gain of 15% or above ⚒️ Above 98% of all planning applications that used the “Biodiversity Net Gain Tool” reported no problems or issues It’s great to see the success of the policy in action, but there are always ways to improve. For example, issuing guidance that there is no need for small sites to be over-reliant on in-house ecologists as tools like ours can speed up the process. BNG has been able to integrate nature into development in a way that we haven’t seen before thanks to the hard work of those at DEFRA and Natural England. It’s now clearer than ever that addressing biodiversity loss is not just about conservation – it’s a critical factor for resilient economies, food security, and human health. This year’s COP saw new commitments and strengthened goals, including the UK's continued dedication to the 30by30 strategy — aiming to protect 30% of the nation’s land and marine areas by 2030. This is more than a target. It’s a much-needed recognition that protecting nature is essential to our climate goals, public health, and sustainable economies. Protecting nature must always be integral to our climate action and meeting our targets set out in the 2021 Environment Act. Great to see an important debate take place in the House of Lords yesterday on the implementation of BNG. It referenced data from Knight Frank showing that only 7% of planning applications currently acknowledge a need for BNG. Hope to see more of this issue being discussed so that BNG can deliver its full potential as a world-leading policy to protect our natural environment. #BiodiversityNetGain #BNG

🌍 This week the Government unveiled an ambitious package to restore nature globally, moving towards the goal of protecting 30% of land and sea by 2030. We welcome this new criteria that will ensure that protected areas in the UK truly contribute to nature recovery, and the commitment to driving forward on international targets to halt biodiversity loss. With a #30by30 delivery strategy in development, the UK is set to supercharge efforts to protect nature both at home and abroad, fronting tackling the ongoing biodiversity and climate crisis. 🐝🌱 We were pleased to see that Natural England published a new guest blog post on the benefits of BNG in promoting health and wellbeing. As these NHS professionals make clear, helping hospitals to plan for and adopt BNG across their sites is not just about benefiting the planet but also the people and patients who use these spaces. BNG compliance does not need to be time or resource-intensive either.
