Updates

  • There’s always something new to learn, and our diverse engineering team have been expanding their expertise. Associate Director Paul Jones (electrical) and Mechanical Engineer Ross Strickland have been updating their knowledge on a University certified professional development course on European (EU & UK) Machinery Safety requirements, largely based on the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. Having both successfully completed a five-day online course, they have sixteen weeks to complete an assignment using a virtual reality software package, which depicts numerous machines along with their technical files and other relevant documentation, requiring them to complete PUWER checklists and a minimum of 25 risk assessments. Mechanical Engineer George Stacey CEng IMechE and Senior Mechanical Engineer Yue He CEng IMechE will be attending a Fundamentals of Corrosion course presented by the INSTITUTE OF CORROSION in October. The course will aid their ability to assess potential or actual corrosion situations to enable them to build anti-corrosion measures and strategies into projects, and help them understand mechanisms and causes of common premature failures. Every day is a school day! #KGALconsultingengineers #professionaldevelopment

  • 💥Another blast from the past; 10 years ago we were commissioned by Scottish & Southern Energy to project manage the decommissioning of three 850kW Francis turbines and generators, one pipeline and associated control equipment, and replace with new equipment at Storr Lochs on the beautiful Isle of Skye 🏝️ Originally commissioned in 1952, Storr Lochs hydroelectric power station was built by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board using water 💧 from Lochs Leathan and Fada to provide the first general supply of electricity⚡️ to the island. In 2014, we were engaged to undertake the necessary inspections of the plant, refurbishment and replanting of the mechanical and electrical equipment, including the control system, whilst also fulfilling the roles of Project Manager, Principal Designer and Site Supervisor. The new supply consisted of two new 915kW Francis turbines and generators, a suite of control panels and two 415V/33kV transformers. 10 whole years ago! 🕰️ flies when you're a leading engineering design consultancy! 🥳 #hydropower #watercontrol #designengineering

  • 🥳 15 years ago! It seems like only yesterday. Back in 2009 we joined the team developing a new swing bridge providing a pedestrian and cycle link across the Manchester Ship Canal at Media City in Salford Quays. Appointed by Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering Ltd, we provided the complete detailed design of the swing bridge pivot, jacking, and operating & control systems. The work included the complete simulation of the soil hydraulic system, proving the stability of the system over a range of extreme weather conditions, which couldn't otherwise be tested. This mechanically driven, 800 tonne, 83m long, cable-stayed swing bridge rotates about a vertical axis through 71°, providing a clear, navigable passage across the 30m span when opened to waterway traffic. This is just one of the many moving bridges we've been involved with over the last 33 years. Site progress on the spillway rehabilitation at Kariba Dam on the Zambezi River, one of KGAL’s longest running and most important projects, has picked up rapidly on site in recent months. Since starting the project in January 2016, KGAL has been involved in design, quality assurance, factory inspections, site inspections and continued technical support to the client, the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA).   The 16th Joint Mission, which brings together the financiers, the Panel of Experts and all the regional stakeholders, was held in November in Siavonga, Zambia, where KGAL was represented by Nick Crosby, who presented the progress on the hydromechanical works.   A further stage of works to replace the six hoists that operate the spillway gates has been tendered and Nick is currently undertaking the technical evaluation of the bids in December in Harare, Zimbabwe. 🇿🇼 #watercontrol #designengineering Images courtesy of the ZRA

Fresh back from exhibiting on the 🇬🇧UK Pavilion at #HYDRO2023 in Edinburgh last week, we can now reflect on a superb event. Dave Griffiths, Nicholas Crosby and Yue He were kept busy with lots going on - interesting conference sessions, fabulous social events and a buzzing exhibition stand - and it was great to see lots of friends, colleagues and partners from the international #hydropower industry again. We're looking forward to the next one (in Graz, Austria, November 2024 🇦🇹). #designengineering ✨Thanks to Re:VAMP Marketing Limited for organising another fabulous stand and making sure we had everything we needed.
