About us
The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King’s College London is Europe’s largest centre for research and education in psychiatry, psychology, and basic and clinical neuroscience. It produces more highly cited outputs (top 1% citations) on psychiatry and mental health than any other centre (SciVal 2021), and on this metric has risen from 16th (2014) to 4th (2021) in the world for highly cited neuroscience outputs. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), 90% of research at the IoPPN was deemed ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ (3* and 4*). World-leading research from the IoPPN has made, and continues to make, an impact on how we understand, prevent and treat mental illness, neurological conditions, and other conditions that affect the brain.

Yesterday King’s and the Science Media Centre hosted a media event for UK scientists. A panel of journalists from The Times, BBC Radio 4, The Sun and PA Media shared insight into the world of science media, followed by a Q&A with leading UK academics. Professor Rachel Mills CBE, Senior Vice President (Academic) at King’s College London, spoke at the workshop, which was held at Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience. Professor Mills said: “The event was a great opportunity for academics like me to share our experience of working with the news media and the importance of communicating scientific work. I drew upon my own experiences in the field of oceanography, where media was an invaluable part of promoting our research and connecting with other scientists around the world. “People fundamentally want scientists to engage and give more of themselves to the general public. Engaging with traditional media, alongside emerging social media trends, is a vital way of doing this. People will remember the stories you tell much more than graphs and long papers.” Read more ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eNiMgKRE #ScienceAtKings #ThisWeekAtKings

As of today, the Joint Committee on the Draft Mental Health Bill has completed its review of the proposed Bill so that it can be formally introduced to Parliament. The work of Professor Claire Henderson and Dr Lucy Stephenson at the IoPPN and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust was referenced in the House of Lords on Monday 20 January and Monday 27 January during discussions on the use of Advance Choice Documents (ACDs) in mental health care. Dr Stephenson told us more: “Service users and healthcare professionals want to use ACDs but implementation remains a challenge. A key barrier is ensuring ACDs are accessible in a mental health crisis – when they are needed most. Many groups, including service users, family members, mental health staff, ambulance staff and emergency department staff, need to be able to see the documents at short notice and often out of hours. Paper documents cannot meet this need; a secure digital solution is essential. “Our research, shared with Baroness Buscombe, Chair of the Joint Parliamentary Select Committee on the Draft Mental Health Bill, highlights that digital tools exist for advance care planning in palliative care, but mental health service users lack tailored options. Without digital access, ACDs may only work for those with strong advocates, deepening inequalities in crisis care.” Learn more about the experience of creating an ACD in our three-part blog series: https://lnkd.in/enXw523V #MentalHealth #AdvanceChoiceDocuments #DigitalInnovation #DraftMentalHealthBill
