On the former, Jes highlights renovating our own buildings for greater energy efficiency – that for the five most recent renovations, we have reduced energy consumption between 60 and 80 percent. On overcoming barriers to collective climate action, Jes draws on previous experience in pointing to stronger, more ambitious regulations in the building materials sector to accelerate action on energy efficiency in buildings. Over 9% of the British public regularly use vapes, while 25% of 11-15 year-olds used a vape in the past year. It is with this backdrop that IEMA has welcomed news of a proposed ban on the sale of disposable vapes in the UK ... Last year, it was estimated that almost 5 million single-use vapes were either littered or thrown away in general waste every week in the UK – almost four times as much as the previous year. Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said vape usage in England had grown by more than 400% between 2012 and 2023, with 9.1% of the British public now buying and using the products. Health Minister Andrew Gwynne MP: “It’s deeply worrying that a quarter of 11-15-year-olds used a vape last year and we know disposables are the product of choice for the majority of kids vaping today." Ben Goodwin Director of policy & practice at IEMA: “The decision to ban disposable vapes is a hugely positive step. The challenges around recycling these products are significant and as a consequence they are likely to end up in household waste or public bins. “This is dangerous as the lithium batteries in a vape pose a fire risk, whilst the nicotine can adversely impact the environment. “More widely, it is critical that the government is able to develop and deploy its wider circular economy strategy with pace, so that the components in a fuller range of potentially dangerous goods and products currently reaching landfill, are instead reused.” Read IEMA's article unpacking issues with disposable vapes: https://bit.ly/3YyMfgm #disposablevapes #electronicwaste #waste #environment

📢 With the built environment accounting for approximately 40% of carbon emissions, the recent launch of The Pilot Version of the UK NZC Buildings Standard is welcome news. The Standard has been developed through the collaboration of organisations such as The Carbon Trust, BRE , and CIBSE.
