London Borough of Barking and Dagenham

Government Administration

About us

Barking and Dagenham is one of London's most exciting and fastest growing boroughs. The council is facing some huge challenges, but we also have the opportunity of a lifetime to grow the borough and our community. We’re 20 minutes from London and have space for 60,000 new homes. We’re building London’s first Youth Zone and are on track to house a new film studio in Dagenham, rivalling the likes of Pinewood and boosting our local economy. We also now have our very own university campus, thanks to Coventry University setting up CU London, offering flexible learning and affordable courses to residents who historically had no aspirations to go to university. Change is needed and it’s happening already. We’re investing in our physical infrastructure and in our community, providing what people need to be able to help themselves. • Last week we announced we will be introducing a new Selective Licensing Scheme to improve the management and quality of private rental homes across Barking and Dagenham. The scheme will begin on 6 April and will replace the previous initiative. This means that from Spring, all landlords in Barking and Dagenham must obtain a licence to rent out their properties, ensuring homes are safe and well-maintained. Through previous licensing schemes, we've made significant progress in improving standards and addressing poor management practices, such as conducting 8,000 property inspections, identifying hazards in more than half of these homes and taking action to improve conditions. As part of the new scheme, we'll also be supporting and recognising compliant landlords who provide well-managed homes with discounted fees available for those who demonstrate best practice.
