Rye House Gatehouse looks fantastic illuminated in its new low energy LED spotlights. It’s another step towards reducing our energy usage, a key theme in our three-year Business Plan. This latest upgrade follows investment in low energy lighting at many of our sites, including Lee Valley VeloPark, Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre and Lee Valley Ice Centre. Rye House Gatehouse at the northern end of Lee Valley Regional Park in Hoddesdon, Herts, is one of the UK’s first brick built houses, and one of many historic buildings throughout our 26 mile long park. #climate #sustainability Dan Buck Jon Carney Marigold Wilberforce shaun dawson Stephen Bromberg Charlotte Painter Holly Curtis Alison Moore (nee Halstead) Tom Oliver Amy Lewis Cath Patrick Paul Roper

We piloted a funded Caring for Horses for Mental Health course at Lee Valley Riding Centre over the winter with Hackney based mental health and wellbeing charity CORE ARTS. The impact was far greater than anyone expected. Eight adults attended the weekly non-ridden sessions, made possible with the support of our Community Access Fund, where they learnt about caring for horses - from grooming and leading to feeding and putting on bridles and saddles. Participants said the sessions reduced anxiety levels, provided energy and motivation. Core Arts Deputy CEO Giuliana Molinari added: "The course has been a wonderful experience that has had a huge impact on the whole group. They’re learning so many new skills and for that one hour a week they are totally immersed in what they are doing." What constitutes a youth club? A question posed by Femi Koleoso from the Brit award winning Ezra Collective, who is championing the need for more youth groups in today's The Guardian. Femi, who volunteers at an Enfield youth club, cites the borough's Lee Valley Athletics Centre as a 'building' that nurtures Olympic talent, but it's about providing opportunities for young people to realise their talent, whatever that may be. Whether it's athletics, ice skating, horse riding, cycling, tennis, hockey or white water activities, our venues throughout Lee Valley Regional Park offer first time experiences, training programmes, spaces to exercise, plus funded activities for youth and community groups. Want to discover the latest thinking on providing the very best sports and leisure opportunities for communities? Head to the Principality Stadium in Cardiff where our chief executive shaun dawson will be hosting some key industry players at a seminar on 10-11 April. "Active Wellbeing in Communities" features exclusive behind the scenes tours of the stunning Principality Stadium and key venues at the home of Welsh Sport – the Sport Wales National Centre complex, as well as plenty of opportunities for networking and keeping up with the latest ideas. The event is being hosted by IAKS UK and Ireland, which has a mission to share expertise from around the world on all elements of active living, sport and leisure. Shaun will be introducing industry thought leaders who’ll be examining how needs are changing and how this affects the way sport and leisure is provided. The seminar uses lessons from the Welsh experience of sport and leisure and shows how these can be leveraged across the UK and further afield. Derek Walker, Future Generations Commissioner for Wales is the keynote speaker on Day 1 and will explain how the groundbreaking Future Generations Act is shaping the country. Owen Hathway from Sport Wales will discuss how they are responding to changing needs of communities as will Lucy Donovan from Newport Live who will be speaking about outreach. Prof Jim McManus National Director of Health and Wellbeing at Public Health Wales will talk about how health outcomes can be improved through facilities. Day 2 looks at what future activities and community sports facilities could look like drawing on operators, government bodies and designers from Scandinavia, the UK and Ireland. These include Joanne Martin of My Leisure Consultant and Paul Cluett of Alliance Leisure. Lisa Mari Watson will be sharing lessons from her work in Norway and Stephen Dietz-Hodgson from JAJA Architects in Denmark will explain how ingenious design can create active spaces. There will be sessions on how entrepreneurship drives innovation from Steve Ward of Newport Live and tips on how to client bodies can get the most from operators with Eoin O'Brien and Barry Dempsey. This will be rounded off with lessons from Uppsala in Sweden on how an approach to activation can improve all aspects of city living with Charlotta Karlsson and Mikael Johansson. Podcasts seem to be like buses. A gap and then two come along at once 🎧🎧. So, hot on the heels of Scott Carroll's deep dive into #biophilic design (https://lnkd.in/eeMRczeH), we have LDA Design director Sophie Thompson talking about 'Wilding the City' with Ross O'Ceallaigh on the Green Urbanist Podcast. Sophie and Ross cover some ground, from the complexities of getting things built, to novel #ecosystems, foraging, den building and swimming in urban rivers. They explore perceptions of a wilder #nature in our cities and what’s needed in terms of management and maintenance. Sophie talks too about her work on London Borough of Camden's award-winning West End Project. It all makes for a vital listen.
