Virtual wards at Leeds Children's Hospital are helping achieve more timely care for our young patients - one of our 7 Commitments. The non-invasive ventilation 'virtual ward' allows patients to remain at home with their care being managed by clinicians virtually. Using mobile technology, the clinical team can change ventilator settings and monitor their patients' progress remotely. Being treated at home is much more convenient for young patients and their families, and since being introduced, the average wait time for non-invasive ventilation has dropped dramatically. We are one of the largest and busiest acute hospital trusts in Europe and we provide healthcare and specialist services for people from the city of Leeds, Yorkshire and the Humber and beyond. We play an important role in the training and education of medical, nursing and dental students, and are a centre of world-class research and pioneering new treatments. Leeds Teaching Hospitals has a budget of £1.4 billion and employs around 20,000 people. Our care and clinical expertise is delivered from seven hospitals on five sites, and they are all joined by our vision to be the best for specialist and integrated care. This includes St James's University Hospital, Leeds General Infirmary, Leeds Children's Hospital, Leeds Dental Institute, Chapel Allerton Hospital, Seacroft Hospital and Wharfedale Hospital. Our staff helped to define the values and behaviours that we should work to, and this has become known as The Leeds Way. This forms the foundation of our culture, our ethos and how we work every day.

Congratulations to the Leeds Radiation Research Centre of Excellence (RadNet CoE) on been awarded £2.9m to deliver smarter and kinder radiotherapy treatments, that are personalised to the patient and their tumour. Professor David Sebag-Montefiore, Professor of Oncology and Director of the CRUK Centre of Excellence, said: “We are very proud that Leeds has been awarded a further five years of funding, which will allow us to build on the outstanding success of RadNet and accelerate the development of biologically and physically informed personalised radiotherapy for our patients. "This award will bring forward the day when we can deliver a truly personalised approach so that we can say to future patients “this is the right radiotherapy dose, the right number of treatments and the best technology to give you the highest chance of successful treatment with the least side effects.” Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/ewS5SCBw

We’re so proud of our team at Chapel Allerton Hospital who have been caring for Jody Ellis. She’s been learning how to walk, talk and swallow again after an operation to remove a brain tumour. Jody is so determined to walk down the aisle at her wedding after a wonderful proposal at the hospital from her now-fiancée Chris. Jody was told she was at “imminent risk” of paralysis and death due to the tumour. Jody's doing great, supported for almost a year and a half by many brilliant colleagues at Chapel Allerton Hospital: nurses, surgical team, occupational therapists, physio, speech therapists and more. We’ve heard from Jody and Chris that they’re so grateful to the amazing team for all they’ve done. Read the full story here, along with the proposal video! https://lnkd.in/eaFr28QH

Anyone recognise these familiar faces? 30 years ago Dr Thomas Starzl, renowned American liver transplant consultant, visited Leeds and planted a monkey puzzle tree outside Lincoln Wing at St James's to commemorate our transplant programme. Dr Starzl was the first person in the world to successfully perform a liver transplant and our very own Professor Geoffrey Giles learned from him abroad before coming back to Leeds and starting the programme here. The monkey puzzle was planted to pay homage to Dr Starzl's book. "The Puzzle People", which in his view was like organ transplantation - rebuilding people with organs from others, much like a puzzle. This small sapling has grown to great heights, and you can't miss it when visiting Lincoln Wing now. Colleagues from the original image taken during planting re-joined to mark how far the programme has come. Photo: Professor Peter Lodge, colleague for more than 30 years, alongside former colleagues Professor Pierre Guillou and Professor Steve Pollard. They were joined by the family of Professor Geoffrey Giles, his wife Pam and son Matthew.

We recently celebrated the graduates of our Reciprocal Mentoring programme. This is the third time we’ve run this programme and is part of our efforts to build an inclusive culture. The programme pairs a senior leader with an aspiring leader from an underrepresented staff group, so we can learn from each other, break down barriers and improve opportunities for future leaders. James Goodyear, Director of Strategy said he found it eye opening to understand the experience of some colleagues in underrepresented groups and the conversations I had with my mentor helped me reflect on my own assumptions and how I can contribute to a more equitable organisation as a leader, in The Leeds Way.”

We’re excited to announce the Trust has released its latest podcast series, In Safe Hands, a deep dive into the life-changing world of hand transplants. We've captured stories from both patients and medical professionals, highlighting the emotional journeys of those who have experienced the challenges and rewards of receiving a hand transplant and how this remarkable procedure has changed their lives. The first episode chronicles Corinne Hutton's journey from a life-threatening illness to becoming a double hand transplant recipient. Corinne shows such great spirit and humour through her journey.
