We are thrilled to announce that we are committing £5 million over the next 5 years to establish a new Centre for Translational AMR Research (CTAR) at the University of Cape Town's Drug Discovery and Development Centre (H3D), University of Cape Town. The CTAR Programme will combine the unique strengths of LifeArc and H3D to tackle AMR, by supporting the development of first-in-class treatments for multidrug-resistant infections. It will focus on gram-negative bacteria like Acinetobacter baumannii, which is one of the World Health Organization's "priority pathogens" due to its significant threat to public health. The programme also aims to help support local research capacity in Africa, where the incidence and impact of microbial resistance are widespread. We will provide H3D with multidisciplinary support, training and scientific placements to help strengthen research capabilities. Recent studies estimate that 1.91 million people each year will die as a direct result of AMR by 2050. This means that 39 million people will lose their lives between 2025 and 2050 if we don't act now. The CTAR programme demonstrates our ongoing commitment to combating resistant infections and saving lives. More venture capital has been invested in UK biotech so far this year than the whole of 2023, and we long surpassed last year's public financing total too. Those green shoots are pushing through the parched earth. The BioIndustry Association (BIA) Q3 finance report is out. Well done Wendy Quainoo and Saqib Lal for getting this report out just three weeks after the quarter end. Speedy work!
