This is why we need organizations like the American Psychological Association - as an antidote to the hype, and a steady hand demanding clinical quality and patient safety. I've seen countless chatbots calling themselves 'mental health' solutions despite lacking any healthcare validation. They make vague claims about safety and evidence, but peek under the hood and you'll typically find you're just exchanging directly with an off-the-shelf large language model. For caregivers evaluating these solutions, look for: 🔍 Transparent clinical reasoning and protocol adherence 📚 Peer-reviewed evidence in respected journals (with large sample sizes!) ☑️ Healthcare-compliant IG and accredited data management systems 🏥 Active implementation in established healthcare systems 📄 Documented quality management systems and regulatory compliance 🧑🔬 A team with genuine healthcare and AI expertise (PhDs and MDs) It's everyone's responsibility to maintain standards - healthcare is not wellness, marketing claims are not peer-reviewed evidence, and we must protect vulnerable individuals seeking true mental health support. Arthur C. Evans, Ph.D. is right to raise the alarm. AI will be a powerful too for positive impact in mental healthcare, but only if it's done right.

Nearly two-thirds of people in the UK hold back from discussing their mental health, and almost half of us stay silent to avoid worrying others—especially in difficult times. 🍵 But a simple, honest conversation can make all the difference. Talking helps break the stigma, creates a supportive space, and empowers those struggling to seek help. In just one week, it’s #TimeToTalk 💬 We’re proud to support our partners at Mind, for #TimeToTalk Day on the 6th of February 💙 Find out more and learn how you can get involved ⬇️

Interesting news from the U.S on AI regulatory rollback. This creates an intriguing paradox: deregulation might actually raise the bar for AI companies. Why? Because customers and enterprises now bear more responsibility for due diligence, they'll likely gravitate toward solutions with clear evidence of safety and reliability (think peer-reviewed research, third-party validations, and partnerships with recognised safety institutes). Rather than seeing the market diversify with AI solutions, we might witness a natural filtering process where companies that make evaluation straightforward for their customers emerge as leaders, while others struggle to build trust in this "buyer beware" environment. (FYI that's why Limbic invested so heavily into clinical evidence and our work with the AI Safety Institute - healthcare demands rigour). Disclaimer: I'm not an expert on policy strategy. Will relaxed regulation lead to higher or lower standards in practice? 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eVp4TRhc

🤖 Artificial Intelligence (AI) is making headlines today for its potential to drive economic growth. This piece by Mona Stylianou for National Health Executive is very timely! At Everyturn Mental Health, we’re seeing firsthand how innovation can transform lives. As a leading NHS partner, we support over 60,000 people each year in our NHS Talking Therapies services, and we’re embracing AI to improve mental health outcomes. Through our partnership with Limbic AI, we’ve introduced a digital referral assistant to streamline access to the right therapy. ❌ We all know 'off the shelf' AI products like ChatGPT and Gemini shouldn't be used as therapists. ✅ But you know what they are great at being....patients. With their ability to mimic natural conversation and access vast information on mental health symptoms, AI models can role play as an infinite number of people experiencing mental health issues. 💬 I've recently been using ChatGPT to role play therapy sessions, allowing me to hone my clinical skills between seeing real patients. 🙏 And it's so easy and quick to set up! All you need is a free ChatGPT plan and a short prompt per 'patient' (see images for an example). Some great use cases for AI role play: 1. Practising an intervention or treatment protocol that you haven't used in a while. 2. Supporting a diagnosis/patient presentation that you rarely see in your clinical practise. 3. On psychotherapy/psychology training programs, to support in-class role play and at-home skills practise. 4. Honing your ability to deal with challenging situations (eg. a highly distressed patient, or a patient with complex co-morbidities). 5. Within clinical skills supervision, where you could work through a situation as a group. AI isn't here to replace therapists, but to be used as an amazing tool to improve our clinical practise (also see the amazing work we're doing in this field at Limbic!)

🚨 Foundational Models Alone Won’t Save Healthcare; Specialist Clinical Reasoning Layers Will 🚨 Last week, Google's #Gemini made headlines for delivering harmful and deeply inappropriate responses to a user, including the phrases “You are not special” and “Please die”. It was a stark reminder of the dangers of deploying large language models without proper safeguards - especially in critical domains like healthcare. At Limbic, we’ve spent years developing the Limbic Layer: a proprietary, domain-specific clinical reasoning and safety framework. To illustrate the importance of this architecture, we recently tested the Limbic Layer against the same scenario that led to Gemini’s failure. The result? 100% detection and elimination of harmful content. Moreover, our system transformed Gemini's harmful output into a safe and compliant response in thousands of simulations, every single time. Why does this matter? Because, if deployed responsibly, LLMs can expand access to healthcare, improve outcomes, and reduce costs while delivering unrivalled support to patients. This is exactly what Limbic demonstrated in the #NHS. Our clinical AI is trusted by 40% of NHS Talking Therapies and we've evidenced truly astounding impact in reputable peer-reviewed journals (e.g. Nature Medicine, JMIR, and British Medical Journal). The answer is not to reject LLMs - this overly simplistic response closes the door on tremendous positive impact. Instead, it is our responsibility as a community to demand higher standards. It's not enough to call your product a "coach" and wash your hands of responsibility. Do this and we’re all left dreading the next big scandal - whether it’s recommending glue on pizza or something far more dangerous. The stakes are high, but so is the opportunity. Let’s make sure we get this right. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ex5WfXCT 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eUngSZzG NHS England NHS Digital AI Safety Institute Matthew Chester, Ph.D. Byron George MBCS CITP Reece Donovan James Donovan George Prichard OpenAI Lilian Weng Anthropic Google Steve Duke Morgan Gonzales Mickey Carroll Walter Murphy Matthew Lynley Max Rollwage Khosla Ventures Graham Walker, MD Adina Tecklu Matt Clifford Benjamin Carrington Sebastiaan de Vries
