#Hamas appointed Yahya #Sinwar as its new general leader. The announcement comes after the organisation’s previous leader, Ismail #Haniyeh, was assassinated in #Tehran. His appointment as the group’s overall leader represents a major victory for hardliners within the group, especially those who support aligning Hamas with #Iran. However, this is hardly a momentous occasion, as Sinwar was already eclipsing Haniyeh in both popularity and political power. Under Sinwar, the group is unlikely to change directions, but is likely to present a more unified, hard-line front, driving an even harder negotiating position over the release of hostages. The successful assassinations of high-ranking #Hamas and #Hezbollah leaders such as Ismail #Haniyeh in such close proximity appear to illustrate a newly-employed strategy on the part of Israel in its ongoing war on Hamas: the use of “leadership decapitations”. Such a strategy would more closely align with what the #UnitedStates, closest ally of #Israel, has been pushing for since December 2023. Security experts note that while such strikes do “not constitute a decisive and existential blow”, it does, however, inflict “psychological damage on them and a very painful hit to their morale.
