About us
The Department of Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method was founded by Karl Popper in 1946 and is renowned for a type of philosophy that is both continuous with the sciences and socially relevant. The Department embodies LSE’s long tradition of analytic, interdisciplinary, and socially engaged philosophy. This tradition, and the fact that to become part of it, all you need is a critical, independent mind-set and a desire to do empirically informed philosophy, is exemplified by some of the world’s leading thinkers and social reformers from diverse backgrounds who have worked or studied at LSE.

📙 It's been nearly two months since the publication of 'The Open Society as an Enemy' by #LSEPhilosophy Professor Jason Alexander with LSE Press. 🆓 You can download the #OpenAccess book here: https://lnkd.in/ekqAG-D7 J. McKenzie Alexander‘s 'The Open Society as an Enemy' revisits Karl Popper’s foundational work on the concept of the “open society” in relation to contemporary threats to democratic values, from the rise of populist nationalism to digital surveillance. This timely, engaging book puts forward a bold proposal for multifaceted social engineering to create more equal and democratic societies that leaves some questions around global applicability and practical implementation, writes Mazlum Özkan in the LSE Review of Books blog ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eEb47xEu

📰 #LSEPhilosophy Associate Professor Kieran Oberman has published his new paper ‘Enough Spurious Distinctions: Refugees are Just People in Need of Refuge’ in Springer Nature. ❓ What makes refugees different to non-refugee migrants? A plausible answer is that refugees need refuge. Within their home state, they fall below some threshold. To fulfil their basic human needs, they must migrate elsewhere. Non-refugee migrants might be badly off in relative terms, but they don’t fall below this threshold. It is because refugees need refuge that they have a claim to refuge. Kieran Oberman argues that states are obligated to admit them at least when they can do so without severe cost. 🔗 You can read the paper (open access) at: https://lnkd.in/eraYWcBw #LSE #Philosophy #PartOfLSE #Refugees

🎓 Congratulations to #LSEPhilosophy Professor Jonathan Birch for his successful inaugural lecture! 🐙 During his lecture, Birch talked about his new book 'The Edge of Sentience: Risk and Precaution in Humans, Other Animals, and #AI' discussing questions such as: Can octopuses feel pain and pleasure? What about crabs, shrimps, insects or spiders? How do we tell whether a person unresponsive after severe brain injury might be suffering? When does a fetus in the womb start to have conscious experiences? Could there even be rudimentary feelings in miniature models of the human brain, grown from human stem cells? And what about AI? 🎥 The video of the event is now available on the LSE YouTube channel: https://lnkd.in/es6_h3gc ▶️ You can download the book for free at: https://lnkd.in/ehVHEVZg #Philosophy #PartOfLSE #LSE #London

🥂 This week, we celebrated the book launch of Jason Alexander's new book, The Open Society As An Enemy - published with LSE Press. The discussion was joined by the panelists Ilka Gleibs (LSE Department of Psychological and Behavioural Science) and Alan Manning (LSE Department of Economics) and chaired by Sarah Worthington (LSE Law School). 📚 In this book, J. McKenzie Alexander argues that a new defence is urgently needed because, in the decades since the end of the Cold War, many of the values of the Open Society have come under threat once again. Populist agendas on both the left and right threaten to undermine fundamental principles that underpin liberal democracies, so that what were previously seen as virtues of the Open Society are now, by many people, seen as vices, dangers, or threats. 🎥 The video of the event is now available on the LSE YouTube channel: https://lnkd.in/eRCyZ9gx ▶️ You can download the book for free at: https://lnkd.in/ekqAG-D7 #LSEPhilosophy #LSEPress #KarlPopper #PartOfLSE

🏆 Congratulations to #LSEPhilosophy Professor Bryan Roberts! Bryan has been awarded a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant for his project The Edge of the Universe. 🌌 "The Edge of the Universe project seeks to establish a new account of our universe at its furthest fringes. Drawing on frontier ideas in both the philosophy and physics of boundaries in general, the project will explore the properties, uses, and epistemology of boundaries as they apply to the universe as a whole." 🇪🇺 ERC Consolidator Grants aim to support outstanding scientists and scholars as they establish their independent research teams and develop their most promising scientific ideas. The funding is provided through the EU’s Horizon Europe programme. Roberts is among the 328 exceptional researchers across Europe to have been selected.
