When do children get their first phones? 📱⬇️
We polled our community of 80,000+ teens on the luna app and discovered that the average age is…
🤯 9 years old.
And a significant number reported they received their first phone at age 6 - just one year into formal education.
This means primary-school-aged pupils, in the prime of cognitive development, are actively learning corrosive online habits.
Primarily, social media - with the average child (aged 5 - 15) spending FIVE HOURS every single day exclusively on these platforms.
As an app, phone and tablet use is fundamental to our business. It feels inevitable teens will have internet access - so 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐬, 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚, 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐲 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬, 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐚 🤝
Some organisations have taken action against the delicing age of phone use:
🙌 Parents in the Irish town Greystones have agreed not to buy their children smartphones until they turn 12
🚫 Eton recently announced that they will be banning all smartphones for year 9 pupils, instead giving them offline Nokia ‘bricks’, with the hope this will improve behaviour and mental wellbeing
🔒 Brighton college are going a step further and banning phones with internet access from the site as well as locking away ALL phones (including offline phones) during the day
But, do these measures recognise that tweens/teens are 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬? What happens outside of school hours, or when the age arrives to be trusted online?
In other words, teenagers exist in virtual spaces, so it’s essential to find social media alternatives that enforce healthy offline habits. For example, GoHenry which promotes early financial literacy or Headspace which is teaching teens the fundamentals of mindfulness.
As well as luna which is supporting 1000s of teens through adolescence everyday with advice, articles, and videos from real medics - including how to thrive in school, home, relationships, and beyond (without constant phone use!)
The internet isn’t going anywhere, so let’s prioritise 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞, 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 ✅
