A fantastic night was had by all at our Manchester Studio's first Big Spring Quiz. The North West's design community was out in full force in partnership with our Studio Partners - over 20 teams entered in total - taking up the challenge to become inaugural winner. How are we tackling carbon in the built environment? In our latest 'Views' piece, we share 30 comments from industry experts exploring themes relating to this question. When it comes to experiential design, Robin Ellis, senior designer, and the Graven team truly know how it's done. For a recent project, crafting the interiors of The Port of Leith Distillery - the first vertical distillery in the UK - inspiration was taken from the breathtaking views, and the complex flavour profile of whisky itself, resulting in an engaging, immersive destination like nowhere that exists elsewhere. The passion Keelan Roebuck, senior interior designer, BDP (Building Design Partnership Ltd) has for design is not only palpable, but when in his company, it’s infectious. Having been a supporter of Material Source Studio Glasgow from its inception, Keelan is a stellar example of a true team player. He sees design as an entirely collaborative effort that spans material and product manufacturers right through to end-users. And he’s been instrumental in sharing best practice for successful specification with our own Studio Partners. Most recently, we caught up with Keelan during our tour of BDP Glasgow’s new workspace in the city’s historic Grosvenor Building. In this chat, we talk about his career journey to-date, from contributing to the development of WeWork in London to a stint at Foster + Partners. Fostering EDI underpins all that Akeefah Tasnia does. From being an active member of the EDI Society at Manchester School of Architecture (MSA), to her time as a Part 1 architectural assistant at AEW Architects. With a passion shaped by her own experience, Akeefah is no stranger to having to "navigate multiple identities". And this was a point raised at our recent seminar, which has led to the term EDI now enveloping 'Belonging' too. Akeefah says, "At times, being different has felt like a hindrance", but through her studies and time in practice, she believes architecture has a power - "to remove barriers and celebrate differences." Ahead of us welcoming Akeefah to our upcoming roundtable, in this interview we chat about her personal experience, and how this is informing the way she approaches the design of buildings with EDI in mind.
