Material Source
Book and Periodical Publishing
A destination for interior designers & architects exploring a wealth of materials and products.
About us
Material Source is a destination - both online, and offline at our Studios in Manchester & Glasgow - for architects, designers and property professionals, exploring a wealth of materials, products and interiors to inspire your next projects. From wood, glass, ceramic and concrete to vinyl, paint, textiles and recycled materials, we showcase new products from emerging and established designers and manufacturers around the world, share the latest interiors in retail, hospitality, residential and commercial, and we take a closer look at the people and practices who use these materials every day. Answering to a growing appetite to discover how things are made, we look at how specifiers and makers choose materials, the challenges they face and the thought process behind specifying for their projects or products. Launched in April 2018, our aim is simple – to inspire and inform as well as celebrate the importance of the materials that bring products and interiors to life, especially ones with outstanding environmental content.

A fantastic night was had by all at our Manchester Studio's first Big Spring Quiz. The North West's design community was out in full force in partnership with our Studio Partners - over 20 teams entered in total - taking up the challenge to become inaugural winner. Quizmaster David Smalley, director, Material Source Studio, certainly didn't make it easy with his questions, but Jill Toal, A&D account manager, CDUK, and JB+CO clinched the title - congratulations team! 🥳 Shoutout to the winners of the Best Team Name: QUIZ-TINA AGUA-LARA - Agua Fabrics Ltd, Kristina O'Keefe 👏 A massive thank you to all our Partners, and the designers and architects who took part. Our brilliant team on the night, Yvonne Gauton, Sam Lees, Marie-Clare Rowen & Hannah Marke-Crooke. And a special thanks to Patels Pies for an amazing spread. Glasgow, are you ready to take on our next Quiz?... 📸 Tim Ainsworth #Events #Quiz #MaterialSourceStudio

How are we tackling carbon in the built environment? In our latest 'Views' piece, we share 30 comments from industry experts exploring themes relating to this question. Perhaps most telling of the global sentiment, one question in particular, 'If you had a magic wand, what would you do to help the built environment hit Net Zero?' was most responded to. And while there is currently no magic wand or silver bullet to put a stop to the climate crisis, there are a wealth of innovators working hard to make a difference. Click here for a run-down of our 30 contributors' thoughts, suggestions, and feelings: https://ow.ly/4xlO50VpL1e A huge thanks to all who've taken part: Michael Rogan, Material Source Studio Darren Clanford, Material Source Studio Heather Macsween, Keppie Stephanie Porfyriou, AtkinsRéalis Stephen Clarke, Flexible Business Interiors Nick Atkin, Yorkshire Housing Michael Brown, Altered\Space Sarah Dabbs, SpaceInvader Tim Hatton, HOK Georgia Ingleton, Sheila Bird Studio Jasper Sanders, Jasper Sanders + Partners Sam Patterson, Atelier Ten Izzy Eling, Incognito Ivor Phillips, Broadway Malyan Iain Black, University of Strathclyde Alison Haigh, Buttress Pippa Nissen, Nissen Richards Studio Pallavi Dean, Roar Dr Roddy Yarr, University of Glasgow Philip Macdonald, Oberlanders sarah de freitas, AXI Mariana Novosivschei, MLA David Mcgowan, Corstorphine & Wright Andrew Bissell, Ridge & Partners Stephen Lewis, HFD Property Morag Dearsley, FORM Workplace Design Consultants Ashley Salmon, Zero Gravity Design Sarah Dodsworth, Ekho Studio Andrew Morris, Jeffrey Bell Architects Andreea Dragos, Stride Treglown #LowCarbon #NetZero #BuiltEnvironment #CommercialInteriors #Sustainability

When it comes to experiential design, Robin Ellis, senior designer, and the Graven team truly know how it's done. For a recent project, crafting the interiors of The Port of Leith Distillery - the first vertical distillery in the UK - inspiration was taken from the breathtaking views, and the complex flavour profile of whisky itself, resulting in an engaging, immersive destination like nowhere that exists elsewhere. Keen to get into the nitty gritty of the project, we caught up with Robin to discuss how it came about, who collaborated on the process - including Threesixty Architecture Ltd & Harley Haddow, what drove the material choices, and how sustainability factored - all to redefine, at the client's request, what a distillery tour could, and should, be. Delve into the creative process with us: https://ow.ly/FJpB50Vp7CV 📸 Top: Lewis Cannon / Bottom: Used courtesy of Port of Leith Distillery / Graven #Interview #Design #PortOfLeith #Distillery #Scotland

The passion Keelan Roebuck, senior interior designer, BDP (Building Design Partnership Ltd) has for design is not only palpable, but when in his company, it’s infectious. Having been a supporter of Material Source Studio Glasgow from its inception, Keelan is a stellar example of a true team player. He sees design as an entirely collaborative effort that spans material and product manufacturers right through to end-users. And he’s been instrumental in sharing best practice for successful specification with our own Studio Partners. Most recently, we caught up with Keelan during our tour of BDP Glasgow’s new workspace in the city’s historic Grosvenor Building. In this chat, we talk about his career journey to-date, from contributing to the development of WeWork in London to a stint at Foster + Partners. Plus we discuss his latest project for PwC, and uncover his thoughts on the crucial role materiality plays in securing a more sustainable built environment. A fantastic discussion was had between a brilliant group of guests at tonight's roundtable in Manchester, asking: Isn't designing for EDI in the workplace just design? Huge thanks to Gemma Copp, project architect, DMWR Architects Ltd; Abigail Carpe, creative director, a-nd design studio; Akeefah Tasnia, Master of Architecture student, Manchester School of Architecture (MSA); Sara Darwin, principal, phi Architects; Maddie W., Part II architectural assistant, AEW Architects; Neil Bowker, associate director, AtkinsRéalis; & Leanne Armstrong, creative director, Black Ivy Design for sharing a wealth of insight in discussion with David Smalley, director, Material Source. And to Richard Bailey, Crown Paints - our supporters for this event, and Founding Partners at Material Source Studio Manchester & Glasgow. Some of the top takeaways included: -We must understand all stakeholder needs -Spaces should be flexible and adjustable, to give people choice, and control -Use data to drive design -Take guidance from what’s already there (i.e. PAS 6463) -Seek guidance from specialists -Encourage post-occupancy studies -And, ultimately, keep sharing our experiences to learn from one another Stay tuned for our full write-up to be released in the coming week on materialsource.co.uk. 📸 Victoria Middleton #EDI #Workplace #Equity #Diversity #Inclusion #Events #Insight

“Tinkering with business-as-usual materials”, Sam Patterson, embodied carbon assessor, Atelier Ten, says, isn't going to cut it in the race to hitting the net zero targets for the built environment. But there's a challenge for material innovators in getting their products to market - it's like “crossing Death Valley”, Sam suggests. In our latest interview, we discuss this in detail, considering the low carbon innovations that should be brought to the fore – and how that might happen. As well as the positive force that is the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard, and the ESG domino effect catalysed by funders. Give the conversation a read, here: https://ow.ly/XA0Q50Vm4uU #carbon #netzero #builtenvironment #biomaterials #innovation
