The aim of the Medical Ophthalmological Society is to foster joint working between medicine and ophthalmology

About us

The importance of medicine in ophthalmology to ophthalmologists in training became apparent to a group of specialists with the advent of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists examinations. The group, consisting of John Shilling, John Forrester, Colin Kirkness, Erna Kritzinger, Tom Barry and Paul Dodson, recognised that there was a lack of knowledge and awareness of the aspects of medicine relevant to ophthalmology, and this led to the formation of the Medical Ophthalmological Society (UK). The aim of the Medical Ophthalmological Society was to foster joint working between medicine and ophthalmology, and to stimulate interest in a new speciality of medical ophthalmology/ophthalmic medicine. The inaugural meeting was held in Birmingham in 1999, and the society has held annual meetings since in different centres throughout the UK.

🎨A Palette of Possibilities: Uveitis North-West Training Day at the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, 3rd July 2024 🖼️The fusion of art and medicine creates a real tapestry. At The Whitworth in Manchester, we hosted the fourth meeting in our series which aims to foster a comprehensive understanding of uveitis, its complexities, and the latest advancements in treatment & management. 🖌️The gallery provided a serene and culturally enriching environment. Its walls, adorned with both historical and contemporary artworks, served as a symbolic backdrop for the day's theme - in particular the intricate and delicate artistry involved in diagnosing and treating ocular #inflammation. 🧑🎨Our canvas had four speakers today (Joanne Wong orchestrating excellently, I could finally take a step back as deputy chair). The works in the gallery, particularly those of Caribbean-British artist & poet John Lyons, and Shirley Craven's vivid textiles reminded us of the importance of innovation, #empathy, and a #multidisciplinary approach when managing ocular inflammation, painting a hopeful future for patients and practitioners alike. ‣ After I gave a "The Year Ahead" preview for upcoming Uveitis research/events, our 4 artists peppered their well-crafted sessions with interesting cases. ‣ The first session was led by Guillermo de la Mata, #MedicalRetina consultant Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, delving into the fundamentals of #IndocyanineGreen angiography and providing intriguing cases that demonstrated ICG in real-world scenarios, including a deft teasing of white dot syndromes with these angiographic allies. ‣ Following this, Ajay Patil, Uveitis/ #NeuroOphthalmology Specialist at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust discussed retinal #vasculitis in a neuro-ophth context. Through occlusive and non-occlusive cases , Ajay shed light on the critical link between #retinalvasculitis & systemic diseases including #Behçet's disease, #sarcoidosis, demyelinating disorders & more. ‣ Then, Eleftherios Agorogiannis, Uveitis consultant from Manchester, brought a dynamic and interactive element to the day with his emergency #uveitis session. Presenting 10 challenging cases peppered with vivid images, he actively engaged the trainees. ‣ Finally, Helen Devonport, consultant ophthalmic surgeon Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust concluded the presentations with an informative & inspiring canvas of #WhiteDotSyndromes. 🙏Thank you for our engaged trainees, fellows, speciality doctors, nurses and other ophthalmic practitioners - these days couldn't be successful without you championing the beauty of medical science and the artistry involved in providing our care through a broader, more compassionate lens. Thanks Alimera for your support for the day, and the lovely staff at the gallery. ⏭️ Our next meeting will be a combined Uveitis North-West X Uveitis National Clinical Study Group day, Wednesday 29/01/25 at Liverpool RCP Spaces at The Spine!

📢 25th anniversary of Medical Ophthalmology Society UK (MOSUK) meeting: Newcastle - Wednesday 7th Feb 2024 Our theme was of medical chameleons - bewildering diseases at the interface between #ophthalmology & systemic medicine, capricious both in their presentation and management. Our invited speakers focused on three diseases in particular. The morning focused on Sarcoidosis - that very protean of diseases which puzzles us to this day, decades after Sir Arthur Conan Doyle made its skin manifestation a plot centrepiece in Sherlock Holmes and the "Adventure of the Blanched Soldier". We started with a fantastic overview of cardio-pulmonary sarcoidosis by Dr Ian Forrest from The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, who emphasised the importance of a #multidisciplinary approach to this multi-system disease, together with collaboration between ophthalmic & systemic physicians. Dr Ailbhe Burke (Moorfields Eye Hospital, London) followed this up neatly by covering #neurosarcoidosis, which can manifest in a plethora of different ways. The symposium was concluded with MOSUK president Dr Greg Heath (York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) peppering his ocular #sarcoid synopsis with some super shape-shifting cases. Our annual guest lecture was a thought-provoking tour-de-force on Ocular #Tuberculosis presented by Professor Nick Jones, founder of the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital #Uveitis service. In the afternoon, we had an excellent Ocular #Lymphoma symposium, with Professor Sarah Coupland, MBBS, PhD, FRCPath, FRCOphth (Hon), Ms Rumana Hussain & Dr Jeffery Smith (The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust) providing the Medical Ophthalmology community with perspectives from diagnostic #pathology, medical #oncology & ocular oncology respectively. All three from Liverpool, which is the home of one of three super-regional referral centres for Ocular Oncology at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, together with a strong University of Liverpool research group co-founded by Prof Coupland with Prof Bertil Damato & one of the UK's leading regional cancer centres. It was a pleasure to learn from Prof Coupland, imploring us to keep speaking with our pathologists! For the fellows and trainees' free paper prize, we had the highest number of abstract submissions in the meeting's history. The submissions were to a very high standard. Both winner and runner-up for this national prize were excellent presentations which deftly covered the theme of medical chameleons 🥇Nightfall & Lung’s Call: A Surprising Nyctalopia Diagnosis (Dr David Maskill, York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) 🥈A Case of Erdheim-Chester Disease in a Patient with Presumed Atypical Optic Neuritis (Dr Raheej Khan, Manchester Royal Eye Hospital) We thank all speakers & those who submitted abstracts, and hope our attendees enjoyed the day. Our next meeting will be in London on Wed 12th March 2025!

These conditions don't always present themselves with clear-cut eye symptoms, making them elusive and complex. Much like a blending chameleon, these diseases can mimic other eye conditions or manifest in subtle ways, making them difficult to identify. Their impact, however, can be profound, affecting not just the eyes but the entire body. Join us in February 2024 for a day of "Medical Chameleons," in which we delve into the diagnosis and management of these intricate, and shape-shifting, intersections of ophthalmology with diverse medical disciplines - with a focus on Sarcoidosis, Tuberculosis and Lymphoma. 𝐔𝐯𝐞𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡-𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭 s𝐞𝐦𝐢-𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 🌿 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐳𝐞 - 31st January 2024 The third North-West Regional Uveitis Postgraduate Teaching Day took place at RCP Spaces at The Spine, Liverpool. A gusty afternoon provided the backdrop for a day exploring some of the unique complexities and challenges within ocular inflammation. We were joined by an engaged audience of over 60 trainees and fellows from hospitals in the North-West of England and North Wales. In this beautiful example of #biophilic architecture which highlights connections between cells & organs, each of our four invited speakers provided a link to the theme of the next lecture. We started with Ms Shi Tan (Consultant Vitreo-retinal and Uveitis specialist) providing a tour-de-force on vitreo-retinal challenges in #Uveitis, whether infective, #autoimmune or masquerade, fighting through the haze. From the literal to the metaphorical, Prof Savita Madhusudhan (Consultant #Retina specialist and lead in retinal #genetics) presented a fascinating talk "Phenocopies and Uveitis", presenting the differentiation between #genetic and #autoimmune retinal disease in a number of cases. Mr Ahmed Al-Janabi from the North Wales Deanery deftly summarised the state-of-play for outcomes with Biologicals in Non-Infectious Uveitis, including his work at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, with an end focus on #Behçet's Disease which provided a neat amuse-bouche for our final speaker. We strive to have an expert on a systemic #medicine speciality at each iteration. This time I was delighted to invite Prof Robert Moots, who founded the Academic Unit of #Rheumatology in Liverpool and co-founded the National Behçet's Centre of Excellence. He provided an outstanding and entertaining overview on the systemic approach of this complex and challenging disease. I then summarized what we are looking forward in 2024 & beyond for #Uveitis, before we had some dinner with the spectacular background views of #Liverpool. “𝘐𝘯 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘬 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘢𝘳 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘬𝘴.” 𝘑𝘰𝘩𝘯 𝘔𝘶𝘪𝘳, 1877 The design focuses on principles of reducing stress, increasing creativity and cognitive function and improving wellbeing. This starts with the distinctive exterior of the building, based on a Voronoi pattern comprising 23 million polygons which wrap the 14-story building in a way which mimics human skin and reacts to the local environment. Thank you to our sponsors for supporting the largest dedicated postgraduate Uveitis teaching day in the UK. Our next #inflammation session in July 2024 will be in Manchester · • —– ٠ ✤ ٠ —– • ·
