Mission 44

Three months on from the riots, I've written a few thoughts that are sitting with me on what happened and the ongoing fight for tolerance and racial equity. The protests have stopped and media attention has inevitably moved on. While immediate reactions and statements of solidarity are common during times of crisis, true progress requires dedication long after the spotlight fades.

Today is the last day of #BlackHistoryMonth, but Mission 44 and The Black Curriculum believe that Black history should be taught all year round. Through their teacher training programme, The Black Curriculum is equipping educators with the skills and resources to teach it. We’re proud to be working with them to expand the reach of their work, ensuring young people across the UK can learn an empowering form of Black history. #ReclaimingNarratives

🤯166 young people attended our 2024 Fair Education Youth Summit with Mission 44 today at UBS in Central London, a conference designed by and for young people who have faced barriers to education. Here are our highlights from the day:     We heard from MPs and policy/decision makers on how young people’s input is taken into consideration and implemented in policy making.     Thought provoking breakout sessions included:    👉 How young people can get involved and have their voices heard, led by Youth Advisory Board members    👉 How young people can use content creation as a tool for change with Coco Khan     👉 Learning how to incorporate social action, soft skills and experience into your CV with Felicity Halstead from GoodWork

🇺🇲 Yesterday, we welcomed 50 young people from Austin to Circuit of The Americas, for a behind-the-scenes look into the exciting world of STEM and motorsport. The day started with the group designing their own Formula 1 cars, and a special visit from Mission 44 founder, Lewis Hamilton, who checked out their creations and shared some words of inspiration 💥 Next, we headed trackside to explore the F1 paddock and Pirelli tyre fitting zone, before taking part in a track-building challenge at Hot Wheels' ‘Challenge Accepted’ workshop. Last month, alongside IPPR, Mission 44 & The Difference, we hosted an event to launch and debate a new report asking “Who Is Losing Learning?” Check out the highlights from this event in our video 👇 A new Who’s Losing Learning Solutions Council, chaired by Pepe DiIasio, will set out how the education sector should respond to this challenge. Yesterday our CEO, Jason Arthur, alongside Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson and Education Policy Institute, highlighted the need to build a more inclusive education system that works for all young people. Mission 44 is part of a coalition of charities calling for change to reduce #LostLearning. Record levels of school exclusions and suspensions are a growing concern. Not only do they limit a child’s future opportunities, they too often address the symptoms of much deeper issues, not the root causes of poor behaviour. The most vulnerable young children continue to be the most impacted, making this a serious social justice issue that policymakers, educators and the community need to work together to take urgent action to address. https://lnkd.in/e245xwE2
