Work, combined with a team-building session, was the order of the day at our recently held quarterly company meeting. It provided a great opportunity to bring our Cambridge, London, and Oxford office members together, welcome our new joiners to the team, and participate in some fun (and perhaps a smidge competitive) games.

To help preserve and enhance Finsbury Park’s habitats and biodiversity, we recently held a co-production day for the park’s stakeholders. We've been involved in writing the park’s ecological management plan so the day gave us a chance to engage first-hand with the local community including Friends of Finsbury Park, the park’s management team, and Haringey Council. A site walkover enabled the community to review key ecological features in situ and also provided a forum for sharing ideas for enhancing ecological value and recreational opportunities. Many of these ideas were penned on Post-it notes and stuck on a wall for all to see. It was a productive day that helped us to identify common goals and understand how we can all work together to safeguard the future of Finsbury Park.

Rewilding to some may seem a 'messy chaos' however, it offers an exciting, natural, and positive way to restore balance to ecosystems. Our latest article provides an understanding of rewilding as an approach to conservation, what's involved, and how ecologists can play an important role in rewilding projects. Despite getting my hair caught in a tree, I definitely appreciated the extra time to be outdoors.
We share some snaps our team took during their 'Walk and Talk' sessions last week to acknowledge Mental Health Awareness Week. Whether it was taking in the Oxford office's local wildlife, enjoying time out by the River Thames near our London office, or enjoying hand-made ice cream in Cambridge, our team appreciated the time to step away, get active, and connect with their peers. #wellbeing #bekind #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek

Our ecologists recently took part in a two-day grass identification course led by expert botanist John Handley. It focussed on grass structure, identification techniques (even when not in flower), use of keys, and what habitats the species occur in. Training of this nature helps to increase the team's botanical skills and confidence in habitat classification—vital for undertaking accurate habitat surveys and monitoring throughout the year as well as habitat condition assessment for Biodiversity Net Gain. Supporting professional development is a key part of MKA Ecology's company culture ensuring our team stays up to date on industry best practices and learns new skills. #grasstraining #botanicalskills #professionaldevelopment #grassidentification #bestpractice

We’re proud to see our staff acknowledge and celebrate Mental Health Awareness Week 2024 by taking part in a Walk and Talk campaign. They’ve been looking after their mental health by taking 45 minutes away from their desks – outside of their lunch break - to take a breather, get active, and connect with others for their mental and emotional wellbeing. To ensure the continuation of this initiative we are also introducing talks and grab a coffee-sessions every quarter. Recognising the benefits of support and practical advice on issues impacting wellbeing we’ve given staff access to an Employee Assistance Programme - providing practical tools, helpful fact sheets, and confidential, one-to-one counselling sessions by trained experts about any worries or concerns they may have. We firmly believe our staff are our most valued assets and are committed to supporting their positive mental health this week and beyond. #wellbeing #bekind #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek
