  • Did you know it’s World Wood Day? Celebrated to raise awareness and understanding of the key role wood plays in a sustainable world through biodiversity and forest conservation.   For you wood-lovers out there here’s a guest cottage we built in Hampshire a couple of years ago using reclaimed wood, sitting pretty in its environment..🌳 Architects: PAD studio 📸: Ståle Eriksen #WorldWoodDay #mouldingthebuilder #sustainablebuilding #reclaimedwood #thecountryhousebuilder #buildingforgenerations

  • "Most of the existing timber structure and all the plastered finishes had reached the end of their lifespan. Working very closely with the local Conservation Officer and structural engineer, we had to carefully piece back together the building. The excavation of the large basement beneath the house was the largest challenge. Not only did we have to consider the high water table, but the ground beneath the existing structure had to be pressure injected to provide extra stability before any digging could safely begin.’’  ~ John, Site Supervisor When we started working on its restoration, this country house and former vicarage, was in an incredibly fragile state of repair. After encasing in a temporary roof, the roof was stripped of tiles and the timber roof structure was substantially rebuilt. Internally, the structure was carefully repaired and restored, including the replacement of a significant proportion of worm-eaten timber. All failed historical lath and plaster finishes were replaced using traditional methods to comply with the Grade II* listing. Natural sheep’s wool was added to improve the insulation properties of the house including a clever secondary glazing solution to fit within the 18th Century stone mullioned windows. Double glazing was also included in the replacement sliding sash windows, manufactured using traditional methods in our joinery workshops. This was considered quite a coup with the local planning department. Modern and high-tech plumbing and electrical services were threaded within the multiple levels of floor structure to provide the new owners with sophisticated and modern 21st-century living. • “The rebuilding of the barn was especially interesting. Very rarely do we have the opportunity to completely rebuild a Grade II listed barn under the watchful eye of the local Conservation Officer with guidance from a high calibre design team.’’ ~ James, Construction Manager A lot of work and skill went into bringing this beautiful thatched barn in the Pewsey Vale back to life. First, it was carefully taken down to ground level, with every historical principal timber set aside for repair and reuse in the new frame. A solid new substructure was built, and from there, the barn was completely reconstructed—with as much respect to the existing as was possible. We incorporated an extended zinc-clad stoop, creating a contemporary-style garden room perfectly positioned to catch the setting sun. Inside, we installed high-spec M&E services, all powered from a remote plant room in a neighbouring barn. The transformation was completed with high-quality cabinetry, stunning new flooring, and a full redecoration. A real labour of love—and worth every bit of effort! • Great to see the progress on this project in the Candover Valley and it’s looking wonderful in the sunshine. After completing the conversion, refurbishment of an existing coach house, construction of a new garage and stable block, new entrance, bridge and ornamental lake, we have now begun phase 3! Existing single-story buildings have been demolished to be replaced with a timber-framed breakfast room and two brick/brick and flint buildings. Kevin & Richard are busy building the gate pillars and wall for the new entrance - others featured are Andreas (planting) and Tim & Brad (landscaping) Architect: ADAM Architecture #workinprogress #thecountryhousebuilder #countryhouserestoration

  • “The renovation project of our house took a year. We were fortunate enough to have an excellent and experienced team from Moulding made up of local craftspeople who shared an enthusiasm for the work involved. As a firm Moulding have a genuine love of old buildings and understand the importance of detail and getting things right for the client. Integrity and a sense of humour throughout the project helped to make it a fun and enjoyable experience.’’ ~ Amanda. Our throwback this week is this Classical 18th century grade II listed former rectory in Wiltshire. The comprehensive restoration included everything from updating all mechanical and electrical systems to a new single storey kitchen extension on the north in formal ashlar local Greensand stone; a two-storey extension to create additional bedrooms and utility space in coursed rubble Greensand stone. High level roof repairs were essential, including replacement windows and doors in matching detail and the rebuilding of two large chimney stacks in dressed Chicksgrove stone. New floors throughout included a gentle and complimentary mixture of local stone, elm and oak, and work included the re-laying of the historic stone floor in the kitchen. High quality bespoke cabinetry was manufactured and installed to create a traditional and stylish kitchen, larder and boot room. Five new bathrooms were created, each of which with new bespoke vanity units, high quality sanitary ware and tiled surfaces. Complete redecoration and a sophisticated, yet traditional style of interior soft furnishings have created the perfect country house. #TBT #MouldingTheBuider #countryhouserestoration #thecountryhousebuilder

While looking at a new project this morning, I stumbled upon a fascinating piece of our company’s history tucked away in an outbuilding, an old manhole cover from the 50's, proudly embossed with our company name. The new owner mentioned they had come across our original invoices for the drainage works when sifting through items left in the roof by the previous owners!
