🤝 National Inclusion Week: 23 – 29 September 2024 🤝 Dedicated to celebrating inclusion and creating genuinely inclusive workplaces, this year’s #NationalInclusionWeek theme is ‘Impact Matters’, a call-to-action to everyone within an organisation, from leadership through to inclusion professionals, internal teams, and individuals. That’s exactly what we are doing here at Walter Lilly! Following an Investors in Diversity survey, we are acting upon employee feedback to enhance our EDI training programme available to staff. With over 20% of our employees expressing a desire to learn more about the various strands of EDI applicable to the workplace, over the last 12 months we have successfully launched and delivered a series of foundational online training sessions to expand employee knowledge around the topics of Bullying and Harassment, Unconscious Bias, and Menopause / Andropause. This additional training reflects our unwavering commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive workplace culture, and our strategy doesn’t end there. The next phase of our training programme involves a further roll-out of courses tailored to Tackling Unconscious Bias, Managing Stress, and Conversations Around Women’s Health. Just this month, training specific to Menstrual Health Awareness has been facilitated for employees, shaped to encourage open and honest dialogue around a subject which for centuries has been seen as ‘taboo’. Well not to us - a business where approximately one fifth of our staff are female! We intend not only to nurture the professional skills of our workforce, but to also take tangible steps towards overcoming traditional industry stereotypes. As we continue developing and finalising our EDI strategy for 2025, Walter Lilly will continue looking to its people for help identifying common trends that will drive our future efforts. We recognise that such feedback is truly invaluable, and offer a huge thank you to all who took part. #nationalinclusionweek #investorsindiversity #EDI #change #inclusion #diversity #impact #impactmatters

FACT FRIDAY: In 2000, Nelson Mandela officially opened the Millennium Project at Southwark Cathedral - London’s oldest Gothic church, dating back to 1220. Walter Lilly was contracted to carry out this impressive project, which linked the Cathedral’s Victorian offices with the historic Chapter House, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern engineering. One of the new development’s main features is the interactive Visitor Centre. The new structure, built using Clipsham limestone and hand-knapped Norfolk flints, carefully mirrored the Cathedral’s original design. Salvaged Cadeby stone was used in the remodelled Chapter House, while Portland stone and Westmoreland slate tied together the old and new. A new walkway was created to showcase archaeological finds revealed during construction works. Of special note are a former Roman road and a 17th-18th century Delftware pottery kiln, which were conserved and remain exposed at the east end of the street. The project, later visited by King Charles III, won numerous awards including a RIBA Award and Natural Stone Crafts Awards, testament to the high level of craftsmanship involved. We invited several of our retired staff members to revisit their past project at Southwark Cathedral. United by a shared sense of pride, the group took a walk down memory lane, reminiscing on and celebrating the legacy they helped create ⛪ #factfriday #nelsonmandela #kingcharlesIII #southwarkcathedral #southwark #millenniumproject #historic #craftsmanship #archaeology #landmark #heritage

As we shine a spotlight on our Landmark and Heritage Division this month, we're revisiting some of our most iconic projects from over the years... 🇬🇧 Palace of Westminster A Grade I listed UNESCO World Heritage Site, where we’ve been proudly involved since 2016. We have had the privilege of carrying out extensive conservation and restoration work across this historic site, including intricate repairs and replacements of the Palace’s fragile stone fabric, conservation of stained-glass and bronze windows, refurbishment across the House of Commons and Whips roofs, and lighting works within Westminster Hall. 🎻 Cadogan Hall The conversation and refurbishment of a former Grade II listed Sloane Square church into Cadogan Hall, a 3,100m² venue designed to host orchestral concerts, exhibitions, and festivals. The venue now serves as the permanent home for the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. 🎨 Newport Street Gallery Conversion of a terrace of listed industrial buildings in Vauxhall, formerly used as theatre carpentry and scenery painting workshops, into Damien Hirst’s Newport Street Gallery. The project was the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the RIBA Stirling Prize, the most coveted award in British architecture. 🎖️ Cambridge House Formerly the ‘In & Out Club’ in Piccadilly, this Grade I building has suffered from a substantial amount of dry rot erosion and subsequent loss to timber structural elements and decorative features. Appointed as the conservation contractor, we worked alongside heritage architect Donald Insall Associates to develop methods statements, investigate and survey the fabric, carry out condition surveys, and complete squeezes and mouldings of feature elements that were beyond repair. #heritage #conservation #repair #restore #conserve #masony #listedbuilding #UNESCO #RIBA #RIBAstirlingprize

It has been a busy period for us here at Walter Lilly, so it is important that we come together as a team in a social setting to reconnect when we can. We recently hosted an incredible staff challenge evening of 'Knowing London'.   42 team members came together for a fun-filled scavenger hunt, racing around the city in teams to capture some impressive (and hilarious) moments 📸 The challenge involved taking photographs as a team at certain points around London, via clues provided. Congratulations to "5 Men & A Lady" who took the win and a £150 Amazon voucher. 🏆 The evening wrapped up with a celebration at The Mudlark pub, where everyone enjoyed a slideshow of the challenge highlight photos and the winners were announced. A big thank you to all who participated — we look forward to the next event!   #KnowingLondon #TeamChallenge #TeamBonding #StaffSocial #Recharge #Team
