Did you know... ..the average British person munches on three biscuits a day, equalling 204m-a-day across the UK’s 68m population? Over the course of a year, that works out at 1,095 biscuits each, weighing an astonishing 8.5kg! With all these biscuits comes a need for packaging.. For this year’s #StarpackStudents competition we are calling all #designstudents to design and develop a metal pack to hold biscuits. It is estimated that up to 75% of all metal ever produced is still in circulation today. If that's not can-tastic, we don't know what is! #mpma #metalrecyclesforever #waste #recycling #metal

Sunday is the International Day of Awareness on Food Loss and Waste Reduction. So we thought we'd reshare one of our Cantastic facts which definitely bears repeating. We love how canned foods help reduce food loss and waste. The foods are harvested and preserved quickly, keeping nutrients locked in, and have an incredibly long shelf life – up to 5 years in some cases – which helps to reduce food waste on the farm and at home. #foodwasteday #lovefoodhatewaste #foodloss #wastereduction #FLWDay #cannedfood #cannedfooduk #foodwaste #canningfood #metalpackaging #mpma

It’s been another busy week on the legislative front but there’s welcome news from Defra that it’s going to reassess its illustrative packaging Extended Producer Responsibility (pEPR) fees. Our initial study of the illustrative pEPR fees showed that the base fees for metal cans are significantly higher than for containers made from less circular materials. And the difference in fees attracted by the different materials is high enough to drive brand and retailer purchasing behaviour towards less circular products. We've raised our concerns in writing to the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and with key trade media, specifically highlighting to each how this situation could result in steel cans being replaced by higher volumes of less circular materials which will need to be processed, while fee revenue is reduced. As a worst-case scenario, this could lead to the loss of the metal food can, an iconic presence in kitchen cupboards, as manufacturers turn away from producing metal packaging which, despite its ability to be recycled over and over, could be priced out of the market. If applied, the illustrative pEPR fees in their current state would bring about serious market distortion that would generate increased costs in dealing with packaging waste, with the potential to cause job losses in the metal packaging sector, coupled with a diminishing pEPR revenue for the Government. How the DEFRA reassessment will impact all materials remains to be seen, but the openness that the new Circular Economy Minister, Mary Creagh, is now bringing to the table will hopefully help create the level playing field that all materials crave. Ultimately, MPMA’s members are committed to embedding sustainability into societal and commercial practices. Our view is that the EPR fee policy should drive the environmental performance the Government desires. As things stand it would do the opposite while at the same time providing a direct threat to the nation’s food security. #EPR #Packaging #metalpackaging #metals #circulareconomy #recycling https://lnkd.in/dHiZF7Cc
