Supporting women and birthing parents affected by cancer in and around pregnancy

About us

Mummy's Star is the only charity in the UK and Ireland providing support to mums and birthing parents affected by #cancer in or around their #pregnancy. We offer one-to-one emotional support, practical advice, advocacy and small grants to families where the: • Woman/birthing parent is diagnosed or treated for cancer in pregnancy. • Woman/birthing parent is diagnosed or treated for cancer within a year of giving birth. • Family who, in the year following a birth, lose their female/birthing partner as a result of cancer. We also facilitate peer support via private online forums and collaborate with a number of other cancer charities and support services to meet our families' unique needs. We also provide the only bespoke training on Cancer and Pregnancy for midwives, healthcare professionals and trainees. Sessions can be in-person or virtual and include academic and anecdotal content to bring to life the realities of a pregnancy, birth, and post-natal period impacted by a cancer diagnosis. We want all healthcare professionals to receive this training to better understand and are for mums and parents who go through this frightening and confusing experience. Thank you for sharing your experiences Katie Turner ⭐️💙 Mummy's Star has been going now since 2013 and reading the personal account of someone who has been or is going through this never ever gets any less. In Katie’s case it is reassuring to see the referral pursued upon presentation of the symptoms, rather than being dismissed and pregancy related, and this is always at the core of our messaging and training sessions. Follow up on all red flags in pregnancy/post natally and proceed just as you would if that person were not pregnant or had recently given birth. It doesn’t make it any less traumatic or prevent the cruel interruption of that maternity experience for the person at the centre of the diagnosis, but earlier intervention does provide a far wider scope of treatment and surgical options for them and the team supporting them

    Operations Support Manager at Sedgwick

Read my story here! Sedgwick were so unbelievably supportive during the most difficult time in mine and my families life. With both myself and my husband working for Sedgwick, we have had the support and strength from our Managers and Colleagues, which we can not thank them enough for. Mummy's Star is an incredible charity to support mums during a cancer diagnosis and they certainly helped me through it, and since. https://lnkd.in/eirSY5RT

BCAM A -Z P - pregnancy Pregnancy associated breast cancer is defined as breast cancer diagnosed during pregnancy or within a year of giving birth. I was diagnosed with breast cancer when my 2nd son was 8 months old. Whilst it is rare - approx 1 in 3000 pregnant women are diagnosed with breast cancer, it often gets diagnosed at a later stage and so often can have a worse prognosis. One of the reasons for this is likely to be that women find it harder to be diagnosed when pregnant or post partum as many symptoms get blamed on the pregnancy or breastfeeding. Research also suggests that, temporarily, your risk of breast cancer slightly increases after you give birth, regardless of age. I initially struggled to be diagnosed through my GP who said it was policy that as I was breastfeeding I was told to take a course of antibiotics first, even though I showed no signs of infection, in case it was mastitis. Mummy's Star are a charity that was founded to help women diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy and in the 1st year of postpartum and they supported me an my family. They also do great work raising the awareness of cancer in or around pregnancy, especially with medical professionals so that women get diagnosed at an earlier stage. Two people everyday are diagnosed with cancer in or around pregnancy, so it is important to raise awareness so that women know to get anything they are concerned about checked out and to advocate for themselves. link to an article in the metro raising awareness : https://lnkd.in/eZwG_75j #breastcancer #breastcancerawareness #bcam #breastcancerinpregnancy

Loss of #fertility can be a side effect of some #cancer treatments such as #chemotherapy or #radiotherapy. It can be temporary or permanent, and both can be hard to come to terms with, even if the patient already has children. ❗Remember: It is important not to assume how a patient is affected by loss of fertility based on their sexuality, gender or current relationship status. 💙Supportive #HealthcareProfessionals can: ⚠️Ensure patients are aware of potential risks to fertility, as early as possible in the treatment journey ❓Prepare to answer any questions about fertility, and consider opening up the topic of conversation if the patient does not 🥼Refer to colleagues and expert advice if you cannot answer questions yourself ➡️Signpost the patient to helpful resources including: Cancer, Fertility and Me https://lnkd.in/ei-C6QEz 💙Encourage patients to seek expert support if a potential loss of fertility is causing emotional upheaval. ⭐Refer the patient to Mummy's Star! We can provide a dedicated Support Worker who can help patients process their feelings around loss of fertility and signpost them to additional organisations and resources, including our online peer support forum. #cancerandpregnancy #cancertreatment #NHS #CNS #oncology #maternity #midwife

💙Kirsten was diagnosed with #breastcancer in 2018 during her second pregnancy. She experienced no cancer symptoms until she discovered a lump in her breast... "I feel so lucky to have been surrounded by wonderful family, truly amazing friends, and my son’s incredibly supportive school. My husband has been amazing throughout my diagnosis, treatment and beyond. I also love to see the special relationship that my mum has with my daughter now, after being very involved during those early months, to support me. While there is plenty of support if you have cancer and plenty of support if you’re pregnant, it’s very much unchartered territory if you mix the two. I only found one place to turn to where they truly understood the conflicting space I was in and that was Mummy’s Star. So much help was available from them and I am still so grateful. Most invaluable of all was, and still is, the online forum. A wonderful group who have been through all number of different experiences and who are always on hand to offer advice. They made the whole thing feel not-quite-so-extraordinary." 📖Read her whole story: https://lnkd.in/eJaTMwvX #cancerandregnancy #cancer #cancerstory #breastcancer #mumlife #newbaby #cancerawareness
