Is a perceived crew LIFE STYLE starting to become more important than a CAREER in #yachting? I recently came across this reel on Instagram from the Below Deck account, essentially portraying the life of a crew member to be one big party, on someone else’s yacht. Which got me thinking about how the superyacht industry is perceived, on a global scale. Particularly, how social media and reality TV are influencing the perceptions and motivations of new crew coming through. On my last LI post (Are yacht disasters on the rise?) it was suggested in a high number of comments that the increase in yachting disasters could, in part, be attributed to a lack of professional crew in the industry. Therefore, could a lack of professional crew be attributed to an increase in individuals joining the industry primarily in pursuit of a perceived lifestyle, rather than a career? If so, what can be done to reduce this, and by whom? Should recruiters bare a greater responsibility to realign green crew expectations? Does more need to be done to make the yachting industry more widely understood/known, outside from the tainted filter of social media? Should something be done to raise the barrier to entry, beyond the STCW and ENG1? #mycrewagency #yachting #maritime #superyacht

#BATTLESHIP or #SUPERYACHT? Said by many to resemble the characteristics of a battleship, the multi award-winning 141m (464ft) M/Y NORD was built by Lürssen at their Bremen shipyard in Germany and delivered to her owner in Feb, 2021. Formally known as ‘Project Opus’, and then ‘Project Redwood’ she can accommodate 36 guests, in 20 cabins with 42 crew! Her interior and exterior were the creation of Italian design house Nuvolari Lenard! The stunning 88m (288ft) S/Y MALTESE FALCON doing what she does best! Without a doubt one of the most iconic sailing yachts on the water today. Built by Perini Navi in 2006, the multi award winning Maltese Falcon has masts measuring in at a whopping 58m. Unfortuantely, I’ve just come across this video doing the rounds online (IG). Whilst I’ll always be the first to champion the #Superyacht industry, I feel its also important to confront head-on where the industry needs to improve also. At a time when the worlds eyes are on our sector, with increasing yachting accidents, we need to put our best foot forward. Anyone acting in the absence of basic common sense, needs to be held to account. This is by no means a reflection on the vast majority of crew, who take unbelievable amounts of pride in their work. I can only hope this post reaches the individual(s) in this video, and makes them realise that we need to do better. #superyacht #recruitment #yachting #maritime

Are #superyacht disasters on the rise? In light of the recent S/Y Bayesian tragedy, I wanted to take a closer look at the number of yacht disasters in recent years, as the number in recent memory seems staggeringly high. Some people have mentioned that with more boats on the water, more tragedies will occur. However, I want to know is it really that simple, or is the truth more nuanced than that? Naturally, the swelling of the global fleet (due to an increase in new builds entering the market year on year) will play a significant role, but are there any other emerging patterns/trends that we should be paying closer attention to? For my money, I would have bet that technological advancements alone would have greatly reduced the number of total yacht disasters both from: 1) A prevention standpoint (ie. stoping disasters from occurring at all), and also from: 2) A impact reduction standpoint (ie. reducing the impact of disasters once they have occurred). But it seems that is not the case. From the data available to me, it seems that from 2014 - 2023 the number of yachts that have been totally destroyed has increased by circa 233% (3-10, as below)... Yachts destroyed: 2023: 10  2022: 9  2021: 8  2020: 7  2019: 5  2018: 4  2017: 6  2016: 6  2015: 6  2014: 3 (2024 YTD: 12!!) And over the same period, the global fleet has increased by circa 31% (4,404 - 5,787, as below)... Global Fleet (super)yachts over 30m: 2023: 5,787 2022: 5,555 2021: 5,396 2020: 5,245 2019: 5,096 2018: 4,950 2017: 4,851 2016: 4,704 2015: 4,547 2014: 4,404 That's 233% vs. 31%!! It should be noted that the yacht disaster data will include yachts under 30m and is therefore, not a true representation of the correlation between the two data sets however, it does suggest that total yacht disasters are outpacing the increase in the global fleet, at a some significant rate. Therefore, the increase in yachts in operation alone can not be the main reason for the increase in total disasters. So what is it?? Is human error starting to play a bigger part due to the increasing (and in some cases, unsustainable) demands being placed on crew? Is greater demand for onboard technologies a contributing factor with more electrical demands being placed on a vessel, and therefore increasing demands on the ETO/Engineer and the probability of electrical fires? (Any ETO's have a perspective on this?) Or are vessels simply not as safe and durable as they used to be? These questions can only be answered by individuals much more knowledgable than myself so Captains, Engineers, Crew, Managers and other industry stakeholders, please do jump in. Are good 'leaders' a dying breed in the #superyacht sector? I have recently spoken to a Captain who is struggling to find a candidate who can replace his Chief Officer (who is moving on to progress his career as Captain, after circa 6 years onboard as C/O). He mentioned to me that his challenge(s) in finding a suitable candidate was not only limited seeking individuals who are well qualified and experienced in the ROLE itself, but individuals who were are also well qualified and experienced in LEADING a team. This particular Captain, who's crew all have significant longevity onboard, said that he believed that investing into a strong and competent leadership team laid the very foundation for the vessels longevity, and success. He said that "anyone can hire a 'manager', but hiring a 'leader' is a different challenge altogether". He continued to tell me that "there are much more 'exciting' yachts to work on and this is not the easiest of programs, but our team are happy here and invariably want to stay. And that is a direct reflection of the leadership skills of my Chief Officer, and Chief Stew." However, he then continued to stress that after going back into the market after around 6 years to look for a new C/O to join his team, he was shocked to see such a lack of commitment (longevity) and, what he deemed to be, viable leaders. He said that he came across the profiles of lots of candidates who may be able to do the job on paper, but not many who he believed could demonstrate notable commitment to a vessel, and above average leadership skills. Many employers agree that the numbers of good crew, with good longevity are decreasing in our sector, but are good leaders decreasing in equal measures? Are our 'leaders' simply being replaced by 'managers' and if so, why is this and what can be done to try and change the apparent direction of travel? I'm interested to hear your thoughts and experiences - please jump in. Photo: @dare.to.be.danielle via IG #mycrewagency #yachtcrew #superyacht #maritime #yachting
