✨ Let's talk about last week! 🙌 The first week of Nottingham Under the Microscope has wrapped up, and what an amazing journey it's been so far! With only one week left, I'm thrilled by the overwhelming response to the immersive room and related activities — it’s made every effort worthwhile. As part of the Future Makers event by the University of Nottingham Institute for Policy and Engagement, we welcomed an incredible 700 visitors in just four hours! 🚀 Here are some of the highlights: 👑 Welcoming THE LORD MAYOR OF NOTTINGHAM to the immersive room, and hearing her kind words about it! 🎥 Getting interviewed by Notts TV (while kids excitedly ran around me 😅) https://lnkd.in/em7-cqC4 (2:10 onwards) 🔬 Seeing even the youngest visitors, as young as 3, captivated by electron microscopy ✨ 📚 Collaborating with the fantastic team at Nottingham Central Libraries — none of this would have been possible without their support. The immersive room and interactive activities are still available for this final week, so if you're looking for something fun and educational over half term, come by and see what the buzz is all about! #ElectronMicroscopy #NottsUtM #SupportLocalLibraries University of Nottingham Royal Microscopical Society Nottingham City Council

🌟 Today I launched Nottingham Under the Microscope at Nottingham Central Library. 🌟 The whole premise is designed to teach young people in Nottingham a little bit about an unfamiliar topic to them - electron microscopy - and what everyday objects look like at the micro and nanoscale. The exhibition includes a 360 immersive room of interactive #electronmicroscopy images, colouring activities, and free bookmarks (including some amazing holographic editions). The whole exhibition is passive and designed so that young people can explore at their own leisure (I would've preferred this approach when I was younger). Come and find it on the ground floor at Nottingham Central Library, and learn more about what we do at the Nanoscale and Microscale Research Centre (nmRC).

I first started thinking up the idea for Nottingham Under the Microscope (#NottsUTM) in May of this year, and its weird to think that on Monday it will all begin! Colouring activities, bookmarks, and an immersive room - all aimed at young people across Nottinghamshire! ICYMI: The Nanoscale and Microscale Research Centre (nmRC) are taking over Nottingham Central Library for two weeks, as well as being part of the Future Makers event run by University of Nottingham Institute for Policy and Engagement. More details in the press release below. Thanks so much to Georgina Wilding and the team at Nottingham City Libraries for their help and support throughout these crazy but amazing 5 months!

🌊🦀 Tomorrow is National Seafood Bisque Day 🦀🌊 To celebrate, we took a closer look at what makes a crab leg so unique! Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), we examined a crab leg up close, revealing fascinating details of its structure. 🔬✨ The incredible images, captured by our Laboratory Support Technician, Sally Schofield, with the Philips XL30 SEM, highlight two key components: chitin and setae. These materials play a vital role in giving the crab leg its strength, flexibility, and functionality. Check out the stunning close-ups below! 📸🔍 #electronmicroscopy #seafood #underthesea #underthemicroscope University of Nottingham

Nottingham Under the Microscope officially launches on Monday 21st October. For two weeks, we will be taking over the children's area of Nottingham Central Library to showcase the wonders of #electronmicroscopy! The main exhibition is a 360 immersive room with lots of interactive EM images across multiple themes (e.g. pollen, and insects) with most images having a connection to Nottingham. Complementary to this we will also be providing colouring pages and books to spark creativity within young people, and bookmarks (including limited edition holographic versions), so you'll never lose your page again! This exhibition will be passive allowing visitors to experience it at their own pace. However, on Wednesday 23rd we will be teaming up with the University of Nottingham Institute for Policy and Engagement at their Future Makers event to host a complementary stand where our team will be on hand to talk all things electron microscopy. This event will also have exclusive giveaways of our famous pollen keyrings, and zines which complement the immersive room. We look forward to showcasing electron microscopy to a whole new generation! #Nottingham University of Nottingham Nottingham City Council

We are so excited to bringing our project "Nottingham Under the Microscope" to the Future Makers event hosted by Nottingham Central Library and University of Nottingham Institute for Policy and Engagement. We will have magazines, bookmarks, colouring books, and keyrings to give away to visitors, and young people aged 7-11 can visit the 360 immersive room to experience #electronmicroscopy in a whole new way!
With just two weeks to go, we are counting down to our brand, new Future Makers event as part of our public engagement programme! Delivered in partnership with the University of Nottingham Institute for Policy and Engagement at the University of Nottingham, Nottingham City Libraries and STEM City Nottingham, the event offers a unique chance for visitors of all ages to engage with scientists from the University of Nottingham and local enthusiasts as they showcase their work in robotics and cutting-edge technology. We’re delighted to be joined by Dominic Price from the University’s pioneering Cobot Maker Space, demonstrating how robots and humans can work together, as well as Helena F., Flavia Villarroel, Luke Norman and Marjahan Begum, who will be providing the opportunity for the public to interact with cutting-edge technologies and learn about exciting new STEM projects being developed by the University. There will also be the opportunity to meet Matilda, the legendary House Robot from UK TV show Robot Wars; explore how Neupulse are improving the lives of people living with Tourettes Syndrome and take part in hands-on activities with Charlotte Land from STEM Sparks. Open to all ages, but perfect for children and young people aged 7-16, join us on 23 October for this free, family-friendly event. Whether you're curious about robotics, what to know more about future technology or just love to tinker, this event promises a fun and educational experience for all. #UoNFutureMakers University of Nottingham School of Computer Science Faculty of Science, University of Nottingham Nanoscale and Microscale Research Centre (nmRC) Nottingham City Council Paul Cable Jon Rea
