Materials Scientist at the National Nuclear Laboratory and Academic Visitor at the University of Oxford. Based in Oxfordshire.

A year on from completing the NNL Graduate Programme, I’ve been reflecting on all the opportunities it has given me and what a fantastic decision I made 4 years ago when applying (if I do say so myself!) During my final year at the University of Oxford, I knew I wanted a career where I could continue using my materials science degree, but I wasn’t too keen on staying in academia. I was drawn to NNL because I wanted to contribute positively to society, and the clean energy that nuclear provides is the perfect way of doing that. 💡 Since joining NNL, I’ve been presented with so many fantastic opportunities: gaining hands-on experience with atom probe tomography, proposing my own internal R&D ideas, attending European meetings, international training schools and presenting at conferences. One of the great things about nuclear is that it is a tight-knit yet global community, where graduates can collaborate with world-renowned experts and build networks all over the world. One of my personal highlights of the graduate scheme was attending the inaugural School of the International Group on Radiation Damage Mechanisms in California – which I would not have been able to attend without my time being funded by the graduate scheme. There’s been so many experiences like this (too many to list here!) which have helped to grow professionally and personally, all whilst having a great time. I’m incredibly grateful for that! I’m excited to see what the next 3 years bring at NNL, as I look towards gaining Chartership and publishing my first journal papers. The nuclear industry is buzzing right now and I feel privileged to be part of the next steps towards Net Zero for a more sustainable and secure future. And you can be part of the buzz too! If you’re interested in a career with real impact and incredible opportunities, I’d highly recommend National Nuclear Laboratory. We’re currently recruiting for our graduate scheme, which I’d urge anyone eligible to consider applying for. In July we hosted the final meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)’s Spent Fuels Coordinated Research Project, where we welcomed nuclear experts from around the world to Cockermouth, to showcase how we are leading the UK’s work in this important area. As well as contributing to this vital global research, it was fantastic for some of our early career researchers and subject matter experts to be able to share expertise and gain insights from senior scientific staff in the international community. NNL is proud to be home to world-leading experts who are at the forefront of nuclear science to benefit society. We were involved in this project from the very start and look forward to contributing more to global research efforts in future. Read more on our website 👇 https://lnkd.in/eEyeb8f2
