The Royal Town Planning Institute Young Planners conference has reached its midpoint. The planners of tomorrow will need to strike a fine balance, weighing development against the essential wider benefits to society that National Landscapes bring. Great places to start: The collaboration between Arnside & SIlverdale National Landscape and local planning departments to develop their groundbreaking Development Plan Document. https://ow.ly/me5s50TK5Cb The High Weald's award winning design guide https://ow.ly/7LnG50TK5Ca For a general overview, our response to the government's consultation on changes to the National Planning Policy Framework. https://ow.ly/hrwl50TK5C6 Have a great conference, young planners.

It's thrilling to see the Nature Calling project really getting underway. This week children from Fairchildes Primary School in New Addington spent a day in Addington Hills enjoying a movement workshop with contemporary dance artist Aaron Baksh. Being outdoors is proven to improve wellbeing, but it's just great to hear the reviews... “I loved laying down at the bottom of the roots to make poses and I was excited because it made me stretch out and was different from usual and I am not usually outside much. I felt free.” - Joe “I most loved the part in the field. It was seeing and hearing all the bees humming and the fox gloves like little bells covered in fur. It lured me into this open area and felt so good. I just like being in nature.” - Nphina https://lnkd.in/eX7WCyeJ 📷 Ameena Rojee

Thinking BIG for nature recovery. We have a hill to climb to turn the tide on nature depletion, BUT, Big Chalk has 150 partners on board - nature organisations, farmers and communities are all united in their ambition. Hope, expertise and the readiness to get it done - that's powerful!
What can Big Chalk achieve? Dive into our latest blog to explore Big Chalk's incredible potential. Spanning 25,000 km² (19% of England) and fuelled by the passion and expertise of more than 150 partners, the Big Chalk partnership is on a mission to collectively secure nature's future across the iconic chalk and limestone landscapes of southern England. Characterised by species-rich chalk and limestone grasslands and holding 80% of the world’s chalk streams, we are collaborating to restore these globally significant ecosystems and help their unique wildlife adapt to climate change. Our farming communities are pivotal in making this journey as we strive to protect 30% of land and halt nature's decline by 2030. And we should be confident that it's possible - but we need to think Big! Good luck this weekend Polly! If you can support Polly's celebration of 75 years since the seminal 'National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act' was passed, leading to the designation of National Landscapes and National Parks, please do.
I cannot BELIEVE that my #75milesin24hours challenge is this weekend! On Saturday, starting at 6am, I’ll be cycling, running and walking a total of 75 miles along the Ridgeway and Thames Path national trails. I’ve been reflecting on the challenge, and the benefits or otherwise of doing a fundraising challenge linked to work, especially one using the ways in which I usually disconnect from work. I really like that I’m the sort of person who is opptomistic about what I can get done, but also I’ve never had a job like this that demands so much from me. I have learnt a lot about work / life balance over the last couple of years, and I’m especially vigilant of it as I now need to set the time for an organisation. If you’re able to support my challenge through a donation, anything you can give would be very much appreciated. I’m using givestar to divide up the donations equally between National Trails UK National Parks UK and National Landscapes Association https://lnkd.in/e65ebBXh EDIT; I have tried to upload this with captions but they are not currently working.

Members of the Defra and Natural England Protected Landscapes teams were welcomed to Blackdown Hills and East Devon National Landscapes this week. A rainy couple of days but a great opportunity to see: how strong implementation of Levelling Up and Regeneration Act would make a huge difference to clean water and nature recovery on the ground; progress with National Landscapes Management Plans, and; exciting work on species introductions in beaver wetlands. Exciting opportunity for seed funding for nature or people focused projects on the English coast... 🤔
Do you run a nature or people focussed project along the English coastline that's looking for funding? Or know someone who does? My colleague Kate Jury has just launched a 'Test and Trial' small grants opportunity through the Protected Landscapes Partnership's Coastal Wildbelt programme and if your project falls into one of our key themes - People and Nature, Beyond the Boundaries or Setting the Foundations - she'd love to hear from you. For information visit https://lnkd.in/gXEXcTm8 or contact Kate Jury for more information. Applications are live, and will close 12 noon on Monday 14 October.

Our friends at Wildlife and Countryside Link have today released their latest update from Wildlife on progress toward protecting 30% of land & sea in England for nature by 2030. 30by30 is an admirably ambitious target and National Landscapes are keen to play their part in reaching it. To help we need: 📰 Strong guidance and regulations for the new duty on Responsible Authorities like water companies to play an active role in conserving and enhancing protected landscapes 👩🌾 Continued investment in agri-environment schemes, including Farming in Protected Landscapes Our three easy wins in full: https://lnkd.in/eUUYfGhw Headline figures from the WCL report: Amount of protected land has fallen to just 2.93%🥀 Amount of protected sea lags at 9.92%🌊 As countries gather in Colombia for key nature talks at COP16, one thing is clear🌎 We need a rapid rescue plan for nature🚨 Report: https://lnkd.in/eybq-f7B 📷 Jeremy Willcocks, Simon Smith

Fantastic session organised by Becs from our NbS team. Bringing our thinking up-to-date. We live on a single planet with finite resources so we have to cast aside outdated economic models, looking after nature and climate is the only show in town.
How can a Doughnut boost your performance? Very pleased to have been given the opportunity to deliver a version of my How to Bake a Doughnut presentation to the Protected Landscapes Partnership. I’ve been developing an adapted version of Kate Raworths Doughnut Economic model to deliver benefits for the Tamar Valley National Landscape. For more information and a taste of the benefits 🍩 - ping me a message.

The Big Chalk programme has so much to shout about. With over 120 partners, building wildlife and nature connectivity across so much of southern England and being driven in so many places by the work of local communities. This project represents a huge moment for nature recovery in the UK.
