BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME ARC’s South Wales officer, Pete Hill, delivered training in amphibian ID, ecology and survey techniques recently at a site in the Vale of Glamorgan at which he had supervised the creation of two new ponds only a month previously. Following a walk around the site in the late afternoon and a classroom session in the early evening, a torch-light survey was undertaken after dark. A pond that has been at the site for many years showed good results, but the highlight of the evening was finding all three species of native newt present in number in one of the new ponds! 📷 Lousie Taylor

Conserving the UK's amphibians and reptiles and saving the disappearing habitats on which they depend.
About us
Amphibian and Reptile Conservation is a national wildlife charity (Registered Charity 1130188) committed to conserving the UK's amphibians and reptiles and saving the disappearing habitats on which they depend. Amphibian and Reptile Conservation staff are mainly based at our head office in Bournemouth, Dorset. We also have regional staff based in Cumbria, Nottingham, Scotland, Shropshire, Surrey and Wales. We cover a range of activities to conserve frogs, toads, newts, snakes and lizards. Our current activities include managing over eighty nature reserves, working with schools, researching and monitoring species' populations in the wild, and working with other wildlife organisations, and the public, to influence wildlife legislation relating to amphibians and reptiles.

FACTS AND ADVICE ON ADDER BITES The adder is one of Britain's most misunderstood animals. It's a fascinating creature, often referred to in literature and folklore. Many people take great pleasure in spotting adders while out in the countryside. The adder is also our only venomous snake. While adder bites to people and pets are rare and effective treatment is readily available, they can be medically serious. Our advice is aimed at preventing adder bites, and helping people to understand what to do in the unlikely event of a bite. The advice uses the best available evidence, and aims to correct misleading information sometimes mentioned in the media and online. For details please see: https://lnkd.in/gxMtd7D

NEW ADVICE NOTE: Great crested newts can be negatively impacted by fish. Where fish are introduced into ponds, newt populations can be severely diminished or even lead to local extinctions. Our note ‘Preventing harm to great crested newt populations via fish introductions’ focuses on prevention of this issue as an important, and sometimes overlooked, activity in great crested newt conservation.
