Renishaw is expanding its future workforce by welcoming 220 new recruits this year through its Early Careers programme. This intake comprises 63 apprentices, 100 graduates, and 57 industrial placement students, showcasing the company’s commitment to nurturing young talent and investing in the next generation. Renishaw UK & Ireland’s Early Careers programme offers a wide range of schemes and encourages applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds with different skills and experience. Roles are available in Gloucestershire and South Wales and provide the opportunity to gain insight from industry-leading specialists, whilst working on real-life projects and products. “Renishaw has always placed huge value on our Early Career’s programmes as we are focussed on building a diverse workforce that can meet future challenges,” Simon Biggs, Early Careers Manager at Renishaw, said in a statement. “Whichever early careers pathway you choose to follow, you will become part of a highly skilled, multi-disciplinary team working closely to design, develop, deliver and support the best outcomes for our customers. Today, we welcomed some of our employer partners to the training centre for our Employer Forum! 💬 Engaging with our partners is fundamental in making sure our learners are well-supported in the training centre, as well as when they return to their place of work to start implementing their brand new engineering skills. Lots of valuable discussions were had around further opportunities for skills development, how the apprentices' mentors can support them on their learning journey, and Adam Tipper gave us insight into how Next Gen Makers can support employers to become an employer of choice for aspiring engineers. Yesterday, I had the honour of giving a keynote speech on behalf of WISE at the Next Gen Makers annual Engineering Skills Conference at Matthew Boulton College in Birmingham. 🤩 It was such an insightful event, with some clear takeaways on how we can help close the skills gap. 👏🏻 We heard from Calum Nisbet from The Kaleidoscope Plus Group on mental health and wellbeing. He shared some startling facts… Mental health costs UK employers up to £56 billion each year. Yet for every £1 spent on mental health interventions, employers get back £5.30 in reduced absence & staff turnover. 🤯 This is so important when retention in engineering is a huge problem. My personal favourite part of the day was hearing from the apprentice panel about their own experiences. It’s so important to hear their voices, learn from their experiences and understand their motivations and drivers, to help us plan and recruit for the future. 💪🏻 It was also brilliant to hear from Dr. Martin Thomas CEng FIET from AWE sharing the innovative work they’ve been doing to recruit more diverse talent into their business, including a great partnership with our friends at STEM Returners! 👏🏻 Thank you Lucy Hickerman and Adam Tipper for organising a great event! #inclusiverecruitment #apprenticeships

Huge congratulations to Adam Tipper for organising a great Next Gen Makers National Engineering Skills Conference today. BMet are so pleased to be venue host at our #Birmingham city centre campus and to be working with our friends across the #FurtherEducation sector to talk to #engineering sector about the collective services on offer through Skills West Midlands & Warwickshire partners. Have absolutely loved listening to the #apprentices on the panel giving their advice to businesses on how to best attract and retain apprentices particularly young adults into an #engineering business: so much rich content shared but biggest 3 takeaways from the panel for me: 1. Yes, we are a generation who has different challenges to previous generations because of tech, social media and covid related pressures but we just need to all work to understand each other and in particular we need feedback at work - both negative and positive. 2. Somerimes we can feel like a spare part doing the jobs no-one else wants to do. Please put support in place to integrate us into the workplace: not just in the department but the whole and business so that we can see the impact of the role we do. And buddy's we need buddy's! . 3. When it comes to recruitment and attraction don't just give us a leaflet - it's just a peice of paper. We need help to understand how to get a role, practical CV and interview support. Promote the true values of your company and promote the career opportunities and impact the role and work can have on society. One apprentice gave me a real insight into selling the impact of the role and explained how being a toolmaker apprentice meant they might get the opportunity to work on a Disney Cruise Ship - engineering a career that can take you literally anywhere! Thought provoking introduction workshop delivered by Calum Nisbet from Kaleidoscope about how we as employers need to create parity between how we approach Health & Safety and how we approach mental health.
