Working together to improve health and wellbeing.

About us

Our vision is simple. We want to work together to improve the health and wellbeing of everyone who lives and works in Somerset. We plan, buy and monitor most local NHS services in Somerset through a process called commissioning. We do this on behalf of the people of Somerset, our patients and their carers. We receive a local allocation of tax payers money to deliver quality healthcare outcomes while making sure that patients, staff and the public are treated with dignity and respect. We work with and for our local communities. At the heart of every decision is our commitment to deliver the health and care services the people of Somerset expect and deserve. We value our staff and look to recruit candidates to share our vision and values, care passionately about people and healthcare and are effective at what they do. Led by local doctors and healthcare professionals with knowledge of their specific communities and patient needs, we are committed to improving the health of Somerset’s population. NHS Somerset is made up of 75 GP practices and these practices operate within nine commissioning localities. They work together to ensure the best possible healthcare is available and meets the needs of people in Somerset. We plan local healthcare and buy services from district hospitals, such as Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, Yeovil District Hospital and Bath’s Royal United Hospital. We also fund community and mental health services from Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. We work with patients, the public, and many partners, including local hospitals, local authorities, and local voluntary and community groups. Our goal is to improve health and deliver high quality health services to the people of Somerset. With the help of community partners and supported by Somerset Council's Help Through Winter programme, we’re building a network and online map of Warm Welcome spaces to support those affected by the cost-of-living crisis.  You can view the map at https://lnkd.in/eqT2Fzbj. Please share it far and wide to help more people find the warmth, company, and support they need this winter. If you would like to add your group or venue to the map, please visit our website, where you can register your details: https://lnkd.in/edyJgB9z. You’ll also find useful resources to help you set up, run, or fund your Warm Welcome space. If you hosted a Warm Welcome space last year, you should have heard from our colleague Laura by email. If you missed the message, or haven’t set up a space before and would like some guidance on how to get started, please get in touch: support@sparksomerset.org.uk. Looking for funding? Somerset Community Foundation's Help Through Winter Fund opens next week with grants of up to £20,000 to help community hubs continue their work this winter. These grants can support warm spaces, cooking and budgeting classes, community meals and more! Funding is limited, so keep an eye on their website (https://lnkd.in/evvRE4n) and apply as soon as possible. #WarmWelcome #WarmWelcomeSomerset #Somerset #WarmSpaces #HelpThroughWinter

We were pleased to host another of our popular free Menopause webinars this month to help support those experiencing symptoms in Somerset. One attendee told us: "It was professional, but not impersonal or detached, and it made me feel I was getting information from someone who 'gets it'...Thank you very much to Dr Balfour and to all involved in putting it on, great job and much appreciated". A special thank you to Dr Juliet Balfour as our speaker, who developed and runs the Somerset NHS Menopause Service. We'd also like to thank Mel Grenville and Libby Hawker and team for helping to make this event possible. ▶️ The recording is now available for you to watch and share on our You Tube page here: https://lnkd.in/daGVTiBc #menopause #somerset #NHS

Colleagues took time to gather, pause, reflect, and remember at a ceremony held at Wynford House on Monday 11 November. The still air carried the distant sound of a bugler playing the Last Post and the end of the two-minute silence was broken by the siren from Leonardo Helicopters. Armistice Day is a key moment in our calendar, which provides us all with a chance to think about the conflicts of the past and what is happening around the world now. With veterans and military family members among our ranks, the ability to come together and remember is important for our NHS family. The memorial, located at the rear of our building among the trees, nestled in the grass and backed by a car park is easily missed. But anyone who takes a moment to stop and read the inscription would see the words: To commemorate those who fell in this place during World War II. Our office building sits on part of what was once the Houndstone Camp, used by the British Army until 1942 when the British garrisons moved out to make way for incoming Americans. In October and November 1940, attacks by German bombers killed five soldiers at Houndstone Camp and 13 at the neighbouring Lufton Camp, which was located along what is now Artillery Road, Yeovil. The large trees on our site were planted in memory of those who died. So, our site is historically significant, and one we will remember every year when we take a moment to stop and remember. Thank you to all the colleagues who joined us yesterday. For those who are interested, in learning more about the history of the site, Yeovil Virtual Museum is a great source of further information: https://lnkd.in/eFABRSMQ

Staying hydrated helps to reduce infections. It keeps our joints lubricated and improves our sleep quality and mood. Our top tips: ✔️ Drink between 6-8 glasses per day ✔️ Increase fluid intake in hot weather ✔️ Consider fluid-rich foods such as soup, strawberries, melon etc ✔️Use reminders/prompts e.g. start and end of TV/radio programmes ✔️Drink a full glass of water when taking medication.

Today’s highlight is on another important remit of the IPC Team: Antimicrobial Stewardship. IPC teams play a role in ensuring antimicrobial stewardship principles are adhered to and help contribute to the NHS Antimicrobial Resistance Programme through contributing to regional workstreams supporting improvements in respect of the ambitions set out in the UK Government’s AMR National Action Plan.

As part of National Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Week, NHS Somerset ICB Infection Managements team is highlighting its efforts to improve sustainability across the healthcare system. A key initiative is the 2024 Gloves Off campaign, aimed at reducing the unnecessary use of disposable gloves, which contribute significantly to environmental waste, with over 1.4 billion used across the NHS annually. Together, we are taking important steps to create a more sustainable and hygienic healthcare system in Somerset.

Global Handwashing Day – October 15th Clean hands remain a fundamental defence against the spread of infections, illnesses, and harmful germs. Whether in hospitals, schools, or everyday interactions, practicing handwashing with soap contributes to better health outcomes and a safer world for everyone. As the world shifts beyond these recent years, we are asking a critical question: Why are clean hands still important? The answer lies in our collective responsibility to safeguard public health, prevent infections, and promote wellbeing. For further information, please visit www.globalhandwashing.org
