Funding is available for community sport and physical activity projects for young Londoners. Grants of up to £40k are on offer for projects working with children and young Londoners, aged 4-24 from low-income families. This funding will help ensure fairer access to sports and create opportunities for young people through sport. Building Inclusive Talent Pathways: A New Era in Sports Development The recent announcement by Sport England regarding new talent funding to develop inclusive talent pathways marks a significant and timely advancement in the landscape of sports development in the UK. This initiative aligns closely with the work being carried out by the University of East London East London Sport Talent Pathway (ELSTP), as evidenced in the evaluations conducted by Extra Mile Consultancy and Nicky Affleck Consultancy Ltd. The ELSTP programme aims to break down barriers and create an accessible, high-performing talent pathway that supports athletes from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds. The programme's vision is to not only encourage individual athletic excellence but also to set a new standard for inclusivity within sports across the UK. Sport England's investment in inclusive pathways is a critical endorsement of these values—values centred on providing comprehensive support to young athletes and ensuring that no talent goes unrecognised due to systemic barriers. The recent evaluations of ELSTP highlight the importance of comprehensive support networks in achieving these goals. By using tools such as a newly developed Theory of Change (ToC), which maps out clear pathways from programme activities to long-term impacts, ELSTP is committed to ensuring that every young athlete in East London has the resources and support needed to succeed at the highest levels. This new funding from Sport England is expected to significantly accelerate the progress of programmes like ELSTP, helping to build a more diverse and resilient pool of talent that better represents the rich diversity of local communities. The research underscores the necessity of sustained, inclusive, and strategic efforts to make sports accessible to all, regardless of background. Sport England’s commitment to inclusive talent development resonates deeply with the work being done by ELSTP. Together, these efforts are poised to redefine what it means to be a world-class athlete in the UK, ensuring that pathways to success are open to all and truly reflective of the nation’s diversity and potential.
