  • ✨Spotlight Story✨ To wrap up International Women’s Week, we’re sharing our final Spotlight Story celebrating our female apprentices and their career journeys. When Shannon Millar was completing her A-levels, most of her friends were applying to university, but she knew that route wasn’t for her. Ready to dive into full-time work, she looked to NIE Networks after seeing how much her father enjoyed his apprenticeship and hasn't looked back. As a Digital Cartographer Shannon works to update and maintain the electricity network records to ensure that the records the company has are accurate which helps to keep both staff and the general public safe. Since qualifying in 2020, she has been able to develop her career further and is now branching out into other areas. “I am now a senior member of the GIS Team so I take a lead in training new team members and delivering training sessions to other departments within NIE Networks. I’ve also stepped in as the Team Lead during periods of annual leave so I’ve greatly developed my skills and knowledge and I’m able to advise other team members when they’re completing complex tasks.” Shannon is passionate about encouraging more women to consider STEM careers. Whilst careers in STEM have been traditionally seen as male-dominated areas Shannon never felt out of place. 💡 An apprenticeship is perfect for anyone wanting to get straight into the working world while gaining qualifications. I’ve always been given the same opportunities as my male colleagues – STEM careers are for everyone. #InternationalWomensDay #Apprenticeships #PoweringYourCareer #IWD2025 #AccelerateAction

  • ✨Spotlight Story✨ It's International Women’s Day, and we’re celebrating with another Spotlight Story. Jessica Carruth, now a Trainee Surveyor at NIE Networks, started her career in childcare but knew she wanted more variety and more time outdoors. After hearing about the apprenticeship from others, she went for it in 2016, drawn by the chance to earn, learn, and gain a qualification without student debt. Despite entering a traditionally male-dominated field, Jessica found no barriers – just a team that valued ability and teamwork. Now, as a mum to Arlo (3) and Ezra (1.5), she’s built a flexible and fulfilling career as a Trainee Surveyor which involves a mixture of site and office-based days. On site days Jessica could be anywhere from Strabane to Armagh, checking overhead lines and using the data to design upgrades for the refurbishment team. Away from her day job, Jessica plays for Clogher Valley Ladies XV Rugby team. “We’re currently sitting top of our league table with 6 wins out of 6 in our league and about to play our first cup match which, all being well, allows us to play in the Kingspan Stadium in Belfast if we make it to the final.”🏉 Good luck! #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2025 #Apprenticeships #PoweringYourCareer #AccelerateAction

  • ✨Spotlight Story ✨ Meet Laura McLaughlin, Overhead Linesperson. A chance glance at a poster changed everything for Laura McLaughlin. While studying psychology at university, she realised she wanted something more hands-on. Her husband spotted an NIE Networks apprenticeship poster featuring a female climbing a pole and said, “Surely you could do that.” Now, she’s embracing the variety, challenges, and camaraderie of the job – working across Northern Ireland and seeing views few others get to experience. In 2022 Laura and her husband welcomed twin girls, Maggie and Eiméar 👶👶. Like a lot of new mums, Laura found returning to work after maternity leave to be a challenge. “My biggest challenge was returning after maternity. I hadn’t climbed, let alone worked around poles or equipment for over a year and a half as I was in the office whilst pregnant. It was a slow enough process trying to get myself into the same shape I had been, but the team I’m currently in have been so supportive, helpful and patient which has meant so much to me.” #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2025 #Apprenticeships #PoweringYourCareer #AccelerateAction

  • ✨Spotlight Story ✨ Meet Kelly McCluskey, now a Safety Culture & Leadership Coach, but her journey at NIE Networks started with an apprenticeship. After leaving school at 16 and working in unfulfilling jobs, she saw first-hand – through her now-husband’s experience – how an apprenticeship could open doors. Taking the leap into a traditionally male-dominated field, Kelly put in 100% effort, proving that hard work, enthusiasm, and integrity are what truly matter. Her apprenticeship gave her the skills, confidence, and connections to grow, leading her to where she is today. Her advice? Seize every opportunity and push beyond your comfort zone – the possibilities are endless! #InternationalWomensDay #Apprenticeships #PoweringYourCareer #IWD2025 #AccelerateAction

  • ✨Spotlight Story ✨ While our Apprenticeship Programme has now closed for applications, we wanted to take a moment to highlight the incredible journeys of some of our past apprentices. As part of International Women’s Week, we’re sharing the stories of women who started their careers through our apprenticeship programme. First up it’s Sinéad Norwood, one of the first female cable jointers in NIE Networks and an example of where an apprenticeship can take you. Since completing her apprenticeship in 2019, Sinead’s journey hasn’t stopped. She took the apprentice-to-graduate route, using the skills she gained on the job to go on and study full-time at Queen’s University Belfast. Her greatest achievement? Earning a first-class honours degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering – something she never thought possible as a mature apprentice. 👏 #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2025 #Apprenticeships #PoweringYourCareer #IWD2025 #AccelerateAction
