We were asked by Material Source about key challenges faced in the reduction of carbon. For the #museums sector, the answer by Pippa Nissen is specific and unusual - "As exhibition designers, we work in a world where clients are mostly very sustainability-conscious. We offer a multi-pronged approach, combining ultra-durable, high-quality materials that last for decades with low-tech graphic printing innovations, using eg low tack surfaces or clear vinyls. Lighting and AV complete the picture by permitting dynamic transformations that highlight layers and character, but which can be changed with ease. "Our final sustainable ambition – to create re-configurable parts for multiple shows – runs into one major problem: lack of storage. It sounds surprising, but it’s a hurdle we come across over and over again - and one which keeps institutions in the old demount-and-throw-away mindset." How are we tackling carbon in the built environment? In our latest 'Views' piece, we share 30 comments from industry experts exploring themes relating to this question. Perhaps most telling of the global sentiment, one question in particular, 'If you had a magic wand, what would you do to help the built environment hit Net Zero?' was most responded to. And while there is currently no magic wand or silver bullet to put a stop to the climate crisis, there are a wealth of innovators working hard to make a difference. A new series by Design Insider called 'Joyful Spaces' asks architects and designers to talk about one of their favourite spaces and how it's influenced them and their work. This month, Jim Richards was the invited guest and chose to talk about the wonders of Oslo City Hall. As Jim says - 'It’s a building that genuinely inspires awe, inside and out, like a secular cathedral.' Our thanks also to Gareth Gardner for the images of the building's amazing interior. https://lnkd.in/etbEbpWX

What are the principles that underline truly accessible exhibition design? Pippa Nissen of Nissen Richards Studio talks from long experience about what actually works - and what doesn't: 'Techniques that help some people hinders others – for example, a lower showcase may suit children but might exclude older people. What provides excitement for one person might overwhelm others.' Read about the six key guiding points Pippa has devised over many years - and on which she has built her inclusive approach - in this month's new A Museum For Now essay - https://lnkd.in/epuQikk5

The new edition of Architects’ Journal is focused on culture and features a 10-page article on exhibition design, leading with a Q&A with Pippa Nissen, illustrated by images of our recent project at The Jersey Museum - the new permanent gallery ‘La Tèrr’rie d’Jèrri – d’s histouaithes dé not’ Île / Being Jersey – Stories of our Island’ for client Jersey Heritage. One of the beautiful images of the exhibition by star photographer Gareth Gardner, bringing out the wonderful colour palette of the scheme, inspired by the land- and seascapes of Jersey, also headed up the new edition's opening editorial, saying the AJ team had focused on the image as a 'visual representation of culture'.

Happy birthday to Nissen Richards Studio! We are delighted to be celebrating our 15-year anniversary this week! Over the years we have worked with so many extraordinary clients as well as amazing artists, designers and collaborators alongside the incredibly talented architects, graphic designers, interpretation specialists, and in-house team who have all helped make our studio what it is today. We have more celebrations to come over the year - but today we drank Prosecco and ate a beautiful cake!
