Welcome to all 21 students who joined the Nuclear Energy MPhil course this week. Lectures started today and we have a very busy schedule for the forthcoming term, including visits to Heysham Nuclear Power Station and Westinghouse Electric Company. Our first social event will be at Hughes Hall, University of Cambridge next week so there is lots to look forward to, in addition to lectures, seminars and debates which will take place at the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge #nuclearenergy #nuclearpower
Nuclear Energy Masters Course, University of Cambridge
Higher Education
A Masters course for those who wish to make a difference through learning about nuclear power generation
About us
To be successful, nuclear energy requires high levels of both technical and business competence, together with unremitting attention to safety and to continuous process improvement. Cambridge is responding to the prospect of a nuclear renaissance by providing a premium Masters-level degree course in Nuclear Energy. It is run each year by the Department of Engineering in conjunction with the Judge Business School (JBS), and the Departments of Physics, Materials Science and Metallurgy, and Earth Sciences. Teaching is through lectures, seminars and small group learning and activities. We are fortunate to be able to take all of our students on a number of visits including Sizewell B, Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, Addenbrooke's Nuclear Medicine Department plus a research centre in Romania. As a course we have the benefit of a Nuclear Industry Club comprising of a small number of key nuclear energy and engineering companies committed to the development of the industry and who require very capable nuclear engineers, scientists and managers, educated and equipped to contribute and in due course to lead the nuclear industry of the future. The degree overall has a multidisciplinary emphasis and aims to be true to the reality of policy-making and business decision-making. The modular open architecture of the course will allow students to tailor the degree to suit their background, needs and preferences. We are proud of our Energy Institute accreditation. The Energy Institute has strong links with The Institute of Mechanical Engineers.

We are excited to announce that Nano Nuclear Energy Inc. (NASDAQ: NNE) has joined the University of Cambridge Nuclear Industry Club (CNIC)! 🎓⚛️ This collaboration aims to advance research and education in nuclear energy, fostering the development of the next generation of skilled professionals. As part of our CNIC membership, NANO Nuclear will offer University of Cambridge Masters degree candidates real-world experience on our projects, actively recruit top talent, and support the development of future nuclear energy leaders. “We believe nuclear energy is experiencing a renaissance, providing sustainable power solutions. Partnering with CNIC enables us to train the next generation of nuclear personnel, essential for advancing the rapidly growing nuclear energy industry,” said James Walker, CEO and Head of Reactor Development at NANO Nuclear Energy. “The CNIC welcomes NANO Nuclear as we continue our work together to help prepare the next generation of researchers, engineers and scientists for tomorrow’s challenges,” said Ian Farnan, Director, Cambridge Nuclear Energy Centre. “Our mission has been to address the long-standing skill shortage in the industry and instill the upcoming generation with the culture of safety and technical excellence that marks the nuclear energy industry. Combined with the knowledge of where the technology fits into the energy transition and an in depth understanding of the deployment of advanced nuclear technologies, CNEC students will carry forward the expansion of nuclear energy around the world. Our graduates want to work on delivering nuclear technology for the energy transition and this is their way in.” Together with CNIC, we are committed to cultivating a culture of safety, technical excellence, and innovation in the nuclear sector, ensuring we have the expertise to expand our operations and build cutting-edge technologies. Last week the Nuclear Energy MPhil students travelled to Costain - Hinkley Point C for a tour of the site, led by our guides from the EDF Visitor Centre at Cannington. Wearing their new Nuclear Energy Masters branded tops, and travelling in style on a Coach Hire in Cambridge | Grey's of Ely coach made the long journey from Cambridge fun. We were joined by members of the Nuclear Energy Research Group who were interested to see changes at Hinkley Point C since our last visit 12 months ago. #nuclearenergy #cleanenergy #HinkleyPointC #construction

🎥So pleased to host a public screening and Q and A of the environmental film by Oliver Stone "Nuclear Now" last night. We held this in the fabulous Letchworth Garden City cinema and theatre aptly named Broadway. 🎤Kudos to my brilliant expert panel members for the nuclear question time Sannah H.P van Balen, Peter Bryant and Nathaniel Read and a great audience with brilliant questions of course, which made the event so worthwhile! 💪Thanks to Paul DiMambro and Sizewell C for supporting the event. The tech team at the cinema were superb. Thanks also to Helen Oliver for event advertising support and photos. 📣who will take on the challenge to host next?

Introducing my next panel member Sannah H.P van Balen for #Nuclearnow on 13 June here in wonderful Letchworth Garden City and following the screening at our rather lovely art deco Broadway Cinema. 👨🎓Sannah van Balen is a doctoral candidate in the Nuclear Energy group at the Engineering Department, University of Cambridge. She holds an MPhil in Nuclear Energy from the University of Cambridge and an MA in Science, Technology and Society from Maastricht University. ⚡Her PhD research investigates the challenges of traditional radiation risk assessment and management in modern society. By combining knowledge and insight from sociology, health science, and engineering, she hopes to bring new perspectives on the risks that come with radiation and the use of nuclear energy technology in a wider risk society. 🚎Previously based in the Netherlands, she worked as an energy transition consultant to Dutch industry and policymakers. She regularly moderates and hosts panel sessions, webinars, and conferences on nuclear technology and actively participates in the societal conversation on the potential of nuclear energy as a climate change mitigator.

For the past few months, Elina Paivinen and I have been researching the lineage of key terms used in the ICRP System of Radiological Protection. Starting with the first publication in 1928 and a total corpus of 191 documents, we conducted a semantic analysis to identify changes in definition, context of use, and conceptual understanding of words related to the Optimisation Principle (ALARA). We were very excited to present our first findings, focusing on the terms Prudence and Precaution, at the Annual Conference of the Society of Radiological Protection. With Elina's background in English Literature, and mine in Physics/Engineering, our collaboration was an unlikely one. Yet it proved valuable as we were able to combine our skills to investigate radiological protection principles and values, which are rooted in science, from a language perspective. We want to thank the The Society for Radiological Protection and the wider radiation protection community for being so welcoming to us and inviting us to present on our rather unconventional research. And a shoutout to Lucy Henshall for her help with our poster. International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) Nathaniel Read Eugene Shwageraus Peter Bryant

We were very pleased to welcome Industry Club Members to our bi-annual meeting last week. We also had a careers event for our current students. Industry Club Members Urenco Global, Westinghouse Electric Company, AWE, Rolls-Royce spent time talking to all of our students and discussing job opportunities. Thank you to all those involved, our students found it very worthwhile. We are also grateful to Raj Sidhu of the University Careers Service for advising our students on how to write a "stand out" CV. #nuclearjobs, #nuclearenergy #nuclearengineering
