The much anticipated Darzi report – which diagnoses the problems besetting the NHS in England – is now out. While not a surprise to us, its themes and findings were still troubling. Not least, we hope to see the government act on key points around funding, as well as taking action to tackle the broader societal issues that exert pressure on the NHS and determine overall population health. Our chief executive Thea Stein said the report sets out important aspirations to be delivered in the government’s plan to fix the NHS – but that improvement “will take time, commitment and major financial, practical and system-wide support”. In a new Nuffield Trust guest blog written in a personal capacity, he shares his reflections on trying to get things done inside government, with a particular focus on decision-making in the NHS. Robert also shares five organising principles that he feels would help drive better decision-making in health and care in the 2020s. https://lnkd.in/eTWFmfHK

New Quality Watch analysis by Nuffield Trust Senior Fellow Dr Miranda Davies has found England’s most deprived children are 2.5 times more likely to have an emergency hospital admission for asthma – and nearly two times more likely to be admitted for diabetes – than those in the least deprived tenth of the population. Find out more about the scale of health care inequalities among children and young people in England, and what we can do to bridge the gap, in Miranda's new blog: https://lnkd.in/ef8k_QD8

“A shockingly high number if social care workers are still not even paid the legal bare minimum to travel to and care for the hundreds of thousands of people in need of social care,” says Nina Hemmings, one of the researchers behind our recent report – published jointly with the Health Foundation – which looked at improving care worker pay in England. Drawing on surveys, sector conversations and international case studies, the report outlines five policy options the government could adopt to improve social worker pay – including a sector minimum wage and pay banding. ✍️ Guest blog: Jessica Morley says it is important that the optimism for the role of #AI in the #NHS comes with necessary realism, as she describes the three key considerations that must be taken into account before we get carried away with AI’s potential for the health service. https://lnkd.in/g9Z6gSEs
