The Young Foundation
Non-profit Organization Management
The UK’s home for community research and social innovation
About us
The Young Foundation’s mission is to develop better connected and more sustainable communities across the UK. As a UKRI accredited Independent Research Organisation, social investor and community development practitioner, we combine all our skills and expertise, to further that mission. We amplify the stories and lived experiences of people in our communities; using this as a spur to drive locally-led community action and enterprise. And we use what we learn across different communities to spot national patterns of need and opportunity. Then we work with national partners to support new ideas to tackle those shared, national challenges. Bringing together our own – and other people’s – work, we are building a shared body of evidence, tools and insight about how communities are taking action on the issues that affect them. We are experts in understanding the changing role of communities in the 21st century. We have a long track record incubating over 80 new organisations including: Which? The Open University, Language Line, Social Innovation Exchange, School for Social Entrepreneurs, Uprising and Action for Happiness. We continue to offer incubation support, plus office and back office support, to early-stage, innovative organisations that share our mission.

How is your organisation’s ESG strategy contributing to long-term, social good? This question, our CEO Helen Goulden OBE says at today’s Westminster Insight ESG and Sustainability Reporting Conference, is at the heart of impactful ESG strategies. “It is material to a functioning economy to have a functioning society, so the starting question is not 'how do we measure and report our social value?' but rather, 'how do we contribute to long-term, social outcomes that will benefit the UK - its people, places and economy?'” Helen adds: “The importance of social strategies for businesses is not a moral case to win. It is vital to our success as a country - and it is in all our interests to work towards that outcome.” Further, she says: “If we talk about communities as stakeholders, there must be some accountability to them.” The Young Foundation works to combine ‘stats with stories’, bringing different perspectives into the room for businesses wanting to craft effective, and meaningful social strategies. >> Read our Quest for the S in ESG report https://bit.ly/3LnHfVG >> Explore today’s Conference Agenda https://lnkd.in/gkVQP2hV #ESG #Communities #Sustainability #SocialValue

🌍 Are we being too ambitious with our net zero goals – or not ambitious enough? Earlier this week, Kemi Badenoch said net zero is 'impossible' by 2050 'without a serious drop in our living standards or by bankrupting us'. Our Director of Sustainability and Just Transition, Emily Morrison, counters: “The risk of poor quality of life and bankruptcy is not from the changes we have to make to reach net zero – it's if governments and political parties choose not to act to protect the public from the extreme weather we’re already facing. "Just one example, if we do nothing, the Environmental Agency estimates more than 8m properties will be at risk of flooding by 2050. The average cost to repair a flood damaged home is £33,600. That threatens bankruptcy for some, and emotional distress and displacement for all in the clean-up job – even if the homes have insurance. "Further, far from 'bankrupting us', the Treasury’s estimate is that net zero will add £240bn to the economy by 2050. "Rather than naysaying about the losses from net zero, I urge politicians to consider the gains for UK communities – from reduced air pollution to healthier homes and beyond. That seems worth the investment." >> read more at https://lnkd.in/e63W3uvu #NetZero #JustTransition #FairGreenFuture #Sustainability #Community

LAUNCH: It's standing room only at the People's History Museum in Manchester 🚀 We're here launching the Joined Up Sustainability Transformations (JUST) Centre - a new powerhouse of social science research and action to accelerate a fair and equitable transformation to a low carbon society. At the event, speaking alongside a host of key thinkers and actors in this space, our Director of Sustainability 🌿 Emily Morrison outlines the urgent need for the ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council-funded JUST Centre: “There is a widening gap between places that are able to capitalise on green industry, energy, conversion of housing stock, and jobs and skills - and those that are losing industries, livelihoods, community life, and heritage because transition is being managed poorly. There’s a divide in households too: while some are able to capitalise on green technology, clean reliable energy, and net zero changes, others are being left behind through no fault of their own. But the UK’s green transition can address this. Done right, we have opportunities to decarbonise in equitable and participatory ways, so every household and community benefits.” The JUST Centre is a collaborative programme delivered by The Young Foundation and our Institute for Community Studies, The University of Manchester, University of Leeds, University of Liverpool, Lancaster University, Newcastle University, with support from Impact Partners including Citizens UK, Local Government Associations for England and Wales, @Scottish Sustainability Network, British Chambers of Commerce, NHS Confederation, Runnymede Trust and the Institute for Government. >> Read more about our work for a fairer, greener planet: https://lnkd.in/ehT_WkEM >> Read more about the JUST Centre: https://bit.ly/3FrB2qL >> If you’re interested in joining our Impact Partnership, contact research@youngfoundation.org #JustTransition #NetZero #FairerFuture #Sustainability #SocialJustice

‘The Netflix series #ToxicTown tells a powerful story of community connection and hope. It's about local people coming together to create change.’ For our Senior Researcher, Leonie Taylor, ‘this was a very emotional watch, and a very familiar one, as this social context was the backdrop of my childhood.’ Writing for our website, Leonie shares how her young life in Corby has informed an enduring passion for environmental justice – and drives her work at The Young Foundation supporting UK communities towards a fair and just transition to net zero. > Read Leonie’s op-ed: https://bit.ly/3DGqKSY > Watch the Toxic Town trailer: https://bit.ly/41VdYt4 > Explore our Planet hub for a fairer, greener future: https://lnkd.in/e63W3uvu #EnvironmentalJustice #JustTransition #NetZero #Community
