About us
Current Future Generations Commissioner for Wales: Derek Walker The Commissioner's role is to be the guardian of future generations. This means helping public bodies and those who make policy in Wales to think about the long-term impact their decisions have. The Well-being of Future Generations Act requires public bodies in Wales to think about the long-term impact of their decisions, to work better with people, communities and each other, and to prevent persistent problems such as poverty, health inequalities and climate change. The general duties of the Commissioner : “Promote the sustainable development principle, in particular to act as a guardian of the ability of future generations to meet their needs and encourage public bodies to take greater account of the long-term impact of the things they do.” “Monitor and assess the extent to which well-being objectives set by public bodies are being met.”

🚀 Last week, Welsh Government Head of Europe Network, Eleanor Vaughan and EU Policy Officer, Philip Jillesjö Löf had the privilege of accompanying Derek Walker, The Future Generations Commissioner for Wales to meet Commissioner Glenn Micallef, the first-ever EU Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, alongside Zoe Elsner from the Zoe Institute. As we mark the 10th anniversary of the Well-being of Future Generations Act this year, it was the perfect opportunity to share the lessons we've learned in Wales as the EU begins its journey on Intergenerational Fairness. Wales is a forward-thinking, outwards facing nation, deeply rooted in European values, and we’re excited not only to share our knowledge with our friends in the EU but also to learn from their experiences and ideas. #IntergenerationalFairness #FutureGenerations #EU #Wales #Policy #Sustainability #EuropeanValues ZOE Institute for Future-fit Economies Welsh Government International | Llywodraeth Cymru Rhyngwladol The Office of the Future Generations Commissioner for Wales

This year’s #HolocaustMemorialDay highlights the importance of learning about the Holocaust and more recent genocides to come together to take action 'for a better future'. A More Equal Wales under the Future Generations Act means a better future where people are not suffering prejudice or persecution because of their faith, ethnicity or other characteristic. We remember the 6 million Jews who were murdered by the Nazis, in an attempt by the Nazis and their collaborators to murder all Jewish people in Europe. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia, and we remember the 8000 Muslims murdered in Srebrenica by Serbian soldiers. #HMD2025 We must stand together against all forms of hate , and for peace, as we learn from the past to shape a better future. Mae #DiwrnodCoffarHolocost eleni yn amlygu pwysigrwydd dysgu am yr Holocost a hil-laddiadau mwy diweddar, i ddod at ei gilydd i weithredu ‘ar gyfer dyfodol gwell’. Mae Cymru Fwy Cyfartal o dan Ddeddf Cenedlaethau’r Dyfodol yn golygu dyfodol gwell lle nad yw pobl yn dioddef rhagfarn neu erledigaeth oherwydd eu ffydd, ethnigrwydd neu nodwedd arall. Cofiwn am y 6 miliwn o Iddewon a lofruddiwyd gan y Natsïaid, mewn ymgais gan y Natsïaid a’u cydweithwyr i lofruddio i ddinistrio holl Iddewon Ewrop. Mae eleni’n nodi 30 mlynedd ers yr hil-laddiad yn Bosnia, ac rydym yn cofio’r 8000 o Fwslimiaid a lofruddiwyd yn Srebrenica gan filwyr Serbaidd. #HMD2025 Rhaid inni sefyll gyda’n gilydd yn erbyn pob math o gasineb, a thros heddwch, wrth inni ddysgu o’r gorffennol i lunio dyfodol gwell. Without action, spending on prevention will continue to be a casualty of intense pressures on day-to-day budgets and our well-being a victim of short-term thinking. I’ve written this week, in collaboration with the Health Foundation and the Welsh NHS Confederation, to the finance minister Mark Drakeford, to ask that all areas of devolved responsibility, including health, have an allocation specifically for preventative action. Heddiw, mae Comisiynydd Cenedlaethau’r Dyfodol Cymru, Derek Walker, yn galw ar Lywodraeth Cymru i ddiogelu a chlustnodi cyllid ar gyfer atal ym mhob cyllideb yn y dyfodol. Mewn llythyr at y Gweinidog Cyllid Mark Drakeford, gyda chefnogaeth Cydffederasiwn GIG Cymru a’r Sefydliad Iechyd, mae Derek Walker yn pwysleisio y dylai fod gan bob adran o Lywodraeth Cymru gyllideb atal benodedig. Today, the Future Generations Commissioner for Wales, Derek Walker, is challenging Welsh Government to protect and ringfence prevention funding in all future budgets. In a letter to the Finance Minister, Mark Drakeford, which is supported by the Welsh NHS Confederation and the The Health Foundation, the commissioner says each Welsh Government department should have funding that is ringfenced for prevention.
