About us
OMI Architects is one of the leading design-led practices in the North West. Architect Directors, Andy James and Nick Berry head up the practice’s 20 strong team of architects and graduates, all of whom are based in the former ‘Manchester Baths’, a RIBA Award-winning conversion of a Victorian swimming pool, where OMI has created a number of studios for the creative industries. OMI has attracted critical acclaim, with much of its work published in the architectural press. The quality of its work has also been recognised with a series of awards for design excellence including 12 national and regional RIBA Awards. OMI is known for a broad range of work including residential, museums and galleries, offices, churches, education, hotels, leisure, community and public buildings, many of which are within sensitive historic settings. The residential work ranges from large-scale city centre apartment schemes to affordable housing in some of the region’s most challenging communities. OMI has also developed expertise in specialist care provision for adults with complex needs. To date, OMI has built nearly 4000 homes and its recently completed Manchester apartment schemes at Greengate, Alto and Wilburn Wharf are now making their mark on the City’s skyline. OMI has worked on complex heritage schemes involving some of the region’s most important Grade I and Grade II* Listed buildings, including All Souls, Bolton, which was named as RICS North West Building of the year in 2015. OMI’s projects have attracted nearly £30m in funding from public bodies such as the Heritage Lottery Fund and Arts Council England. In all its work OMI seek out the ingredients that make the difference between a successful building or place that has spirit and life and one that suffers from being soulless and alien to the people that use it.

We are delighted that Manresa House has been shortlisted for a RIBA Award in the West Midlands region. A RIBA Regional Award is given to a UK project for its regional importance as a piece of architecture. Successful projects should demonstrate design excellence, be fit for purpose and be sustainable. Working with The Society of Jesus, otherwise known as the Jesuits, OMI Architects have altered and extend an existing novitiate in Harborne, Birmingham. Reflecting traditional monastic arrangements, the building consists of a series of wings radiating out from a retained nineteenth century house. These wings act as a frame for the external landscaped areas and contain 24 bedrooms for guests, novices and senior community as well as dining room, kitchen, offices, meeting rooms, library and a new chapel. Committed to long-term sustainability, the building optimises thermal performance as well as utilising renewables, ensuring the long-term presence of the community. Fantastic to have had a (small) involvement on this project in Lancaster where OMI Architects have weaved a 18th century Chapel and 19th century Sunday School (and a former wardens house) together creating a connected and accessible set of buildings; quite humbling to be part of continuing a 250 year tradition on the site. We are delighted to announce that Havelock is the first full building retrofit project in the North of England to have been certified as BREEAM Outstanding upon completion. Achieving this certification is a remarkable achievement and will ensure resource efficiency and lower maintenance and energy costs over the building’s lifespan. Situated at 70 Great Bridgewater Street in Manchester, Havelock is a comprehensive retrofit of an existing office building formerly known as Evershed House. In total 10,290sqm of office accommodation is provided across 8 levels, two of which were added to the original concrete frame helping to increase overall net-internal area by 3,700sqm. The wholescale internal refurbishment includes the provision of a reception and lobby, lounge areas, cycle storage, changing rooms, showers, and a wellness studio. Each level has access to outdoor terraces, projecting from the steel structure at opposing corners of the floorplate. The deep retrofit strategy, included the installation of an entirely new façade system, developed as the optimum solution through the use of a whole-life carbon option appraisal, ensuring that, through the utilisation of the existing structure, the project retained 2,000 CO2e of embodied carbon, the equivalent of planting 10,250 trees. It has also received a NABERS 5 star rating and has been used in the UK Green Building Council document ‘Building the Case for Net Zero : Retrofitting Office Buildings’. #Retrofit #BREEAM #Sustainability #Office #BCO #RIBA

Fantastic episode from the Women in BIM podcast with our BIM guru Laura Gouk. Well worth a listen to see how she is integrating BIM into our everyday practices and projects within the studio.
On a recent episode of the Women in BIM podcast, Laura Gouk of OMI Architects explains why she’s a champion for Vectorworks as the go-to BIM software in her practice. Click the link to listen to episode 32. 🎙️ https://bit.ly/4f425W2 #WomenInBIM #WomenInArchitecture #Vectorworks #DesignWithoutLimits

Unbelievably it's 10 years since our All Souls' Bolton project was handed over. A fantastic project to be involved with and still one of a kind in the Church re-purposing world.
