The UK House of Parliament saw Labour Party (UK) MP Chi Onwurah, raise critical points about digital infrastructure, supplier lock-in, and sustainability through leveraging the value of open source software in the UK's infrastructure last week. Open source software is at the heart of our digital and national infrastructure today, enabling innovation, and breaking lock-in. However it comes with the challenge that using it requires understanding. The pace of its adoption in the last decade has not been matched by a pace of understanding from a technical and governance perspective. Nuance is all in this space, and lack of understanding allows abuse of that lack of user knowledge, and what we call "open washing" where the term "open source" is used in vein ie where software does not meet the standards we set but tries to take advantage of the benefits we give. For the true potential of open source to be realised we need to understand not just technical and governance but also how markets are shaped and in the case of our national and public digital infrastructure this includes a range of topics from standards to procurement which will be the focal point of OpenUK's next report. We need more MPs, not just Chi, building this depth of understanding to allow the UK to build and take advantage of safe and secure open source software infrastructure necessary for us to see the public sector properly deliver value and sustainability in its software choices. #opensource #opensourcesoftware #digitalinfrastructure #sustainablesoftware
