Standing room only for "Let it go., building new channels, markets and strategies" - The 10 things that should keep you awake at night". ·Higher Education’s messiah complex & its collision with financial & regulatory reality ·Migration & the politicisation of HE – the lost belief in the nature & purpose of international HE ·AI & the digitisation of the recruitment ecosystem ·Escalating cost of acquisition & the challenge of smart restructuring ·Data voids in all key areas – except the past! In an intelligence driven world we are blind ·New destination markets & the growth of non-traditional actors ·Lost narrative – no response to perceived deterioration in UK brand proposition ·Absent student voice ·Rise of TNE ·Poor employability services & employment data ·Culture of clinging to the past rather than embracing the future We discussed: The need to stabilise institutions with sector facing financial crises & mass redundancies, risking a downward spiral in quality and reputation if people resort to aggressively filling places to remain solvent Innovative ideas to address medium-term concerns. Diversifying the international student market is crucial. The tactical and strategic responses in play – we seem to have 3 current approaches – slashing costs, throwing money at agents and hoping to TNE out of trouble Is the new Nous Group report the canary in the coalmine ? - 35%+ decrease in international staff & growth in marketing; increasing fees & decreasing scholarships. We have allowed the narrative about HE to undermine perceptions of quality despite exemplary standards & high retention. Changes to IO's have been coming for a while – how disruptive is this going to be & where are the solutions – what does AI and digital enablement of the applicant journey really mean We live in a HE dream world refusing to face how toxic migration has become & have allowed a nightmare scenarios where students are now wrapped in - & we seek the impossible – taking students out of the Net migration target. TNE sidesteps the migration issue, but we must be realistic about returns given the fees & scale of most partnerships. Recent National Indian Students and Alumni Union UK report showed that the exemplary graduate outcomes of students were almost entirely achieved without help of university careers services – only 3% of students found them helpful. We're going to see continued increase in cost of traditional acquisition routes - this should see greater use of digital platforms & AI finally change how we recruit students Without good data you can only make bad decisions, but we have a mountain to climb. We need better advice & support Sector differentiation has unfolded over the past 10 years – next phase will sort who is and isn’t good at international Are we going to see some universities withdraw from international? with thanks to Vincenzo Raimo, Janet B. At first, the challenge can feel overwhelming—adapting to a new environment, navigating a different education system, and finding the confidence to step forward. But with support came transformation. No longer just a student, but a leader. No longer uncertain, but driven by purpose. The vision is clear. A future in biomedical science, medicine, or research. A master’s degree, a PhD. A career that doesn’t just lead to success, but creates impact—helping people, giving back, shaping communities. Ambition is the starting point, but action makes it real. This #IWD2025, we celebrate the aspirations and achievements of the women in our student community and wish them continued success in reaching their goals. #IWD2025 #WomenInSTEM #FutureLeaders #WeAreOxfordInternational
