Key to the safe passage of those vessels are tugs, the unsung heroes of river operations. In the latest issue of Bridge Gavin Girling, marine superintendent at towage company Svitzer’s Middlesbrough wharf, explains more about the industry and their place at the heart of the Tees. Meet Kirsten Donkin!💗 Kirsten Donkin is the Head of Communications at PD Ports, a major UK port group and the largest private employer in the Tees Valley. Inspiring Female👇 Madonna was my icon. She challenged norms, pushed boundaries, and stayed true to her values. I admire that strength and independence. Biggest Childhood Dream👇 To own a Porsche by 30—I'm still working on it! Career Pathway👇 I never had a clear career path, which can be stressful for young people. I found my passion in communications during my Marketing degree. In 2004, I joined PD Ports on a 6-month contract, saw an opportunity, and 21 years later, I'm still here. Primary Motivation👇 Money isn't a motivator for me but can be a demotivator if it doesn't reflect my value. My main motivations are: 1. Making a positive difference in my career. 2. Spending as much time as possible with my family, especially my two sons. Biggest Failure & Lesson Learned👇 Not saying 'no' enough and taking on too much. I've learnt to let go of perfectionism. Biggest Success👇 Creating PD Ports' first primary school engagement programme, Teesport Explorers, which introduces children aged 5-12 to maritime careers. I'm incredibly proud of this initiative. Reflective Thoughts👇 Take time to reflect on your achievements and value as a person, not just your skills. Takeaway Tip👇 Always be yourself. Never compromise your values to please others.

Meet Amelia Carver Hydrographic Surveyor at PD Ports. Following a degree in Marine Geography at Cardiff University, Amelia undertook an industry placement working on surveys within the offshore sector, mapping the seabed and coastline for marine energy projects. It was here that she found an enthusiasm for hydrographic surveying, enjoying the unique and ever changing challenges of the specialism. After five years of working at sea, Amelia’s next role saw her move back to the Tees Valley as Hydrographic Surveyor at PD Ports. “I loved working offshore, but I always knew that if there was an opportunity to work in the ports industry, I’d grab it with both hands. When PD Ports approached me with an open role, I saw it as a chance to continue working in the industry I love while having a more involved home life." With the needs of the planet being more important than ever, Amelia’s role is helping to protect our environment and ensure the future is safeguarded for generations to come. Our success is built on diversity, understanding and hard work. Doers. Thinkers. Innovators. Engineers. They all make our story stronger. And you could write the next chapter. Next week PD Ports will be attending the CILT awards celebrating the enthusiasm and innovation within the UK's logistics, transport, and supply chain sectors. PD Ports along with collaborators RAWview Automation Drone Systems have been shortlisted for the Technology Innovation award. Our Felixstowe warehousing operation sits at the heart of the UK’s largest port, within the Freeport East freeport zone, and is home to portcentric activity, with expertise in e-commerce and e-fulfilment. We run the largest warehousing and cross-docking facility in the area, helping to improve supply chains on both dedicated and multi-user platforms, with three separate warehouses totalling 450,000 sq ft. Our service agreements with customers at Felixstowe require us to count a certain percentage of stock – an obligation that runs to tens of thousands of pallets. Stock controllers can usually cover one aisle at the lower picking level on foot and, depending on the height of the product, can sometimes do the second without the need of a scissor lift. However, to conduct counts higher than that involved an element of risk, because some racking at Felixstowe reaches eight metres. This requires operatives to spend a significant amount of time working at height on a scissor lift. Safety is at the heart of our operations, so we began actively searching for ways to mitigate risks faced by team members when conducting daily tasks. The best-case scenario is always to eliminate the risk wherever possible. It was determined that a technology-based solution would be best to remove the need to do counts manually. After an extensive search, the stock control team at PD Ports Felixstowe teamed up with warehouse automation experts RAWview Drone Systems to implement a new drone stock counting system, the inventAIRy XL. Since introducing the drone stock controller there has been a significant reduction in health and safety risks, as it has eliminated the need to use scissor lifts for counting stock. It has also demonstrated a clear economic benefit in comparison to doing the same task manually, with direct costs of meeting our inventory count obligations reduced Staff productivity has also increased, by relieving colleagues of the time-consuming and laborious manual counts, their time is now almost exclusively spent doing productive work, which further enhances the service we are delivering to our customers. We look forward to celebrating this partnership and it's achievements next week at the awards. A £1m investment in five specialist bulks tipper trucks has strengthened PD Ports’ services for customers importing grain and powder products at Teesport. The STAS Agrostar bulk tipper trailers, designed for the unloading of complex compound products such as grain and powder, arrived this summer alongside five Volvo trucks. The investment highlights PD Ports’ commitment to portcentric logistics and providing all customers at Tees Dock with an end-to-end service. An additional 10 drivers have also been employed to operate the trailers, with existing drivers in the transport team also undergoing extra training. The new fleet of bulks tipper trucks is the latest in a series of investments in Tees Dock’s bulks quay, including £9m on two 140t rail-mounted Liebherr electric-hydraulic mobile harbour cranes and self-propelled hoppers and additional load shovels, all of which have seen vessel discharge times improve along with wider efficiencies for customers. In support of the new fleet, PD Ports has also achieved TASCC Accreditation, the AIC Trade Assurance Scheme for Combinable Crops; additionally all drivers have also had product and TASCC training. “We’ve worked hard to build a strong relationship between our team in transport and the team in bulks so that we can offer customers the option of a service that sees us handle their product from quay to end destination, making it more efficient and cost effective." - Chris Poole, PD Ports transport manager (bulks) For more information visit: https://lnkd.in/emwKyAvU IBJ - International Bulk Journal // Road Haulage Association (RHA) // CILT International - The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport International // UK Major Ports Group // British Ports Association
