In timeless stories like “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “James and the Giant Peach,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox” and “Matilda,” the author Roald Dahl introduces wonderfully one-of-a-kind characters and worlds that have mesmerized generations of children and more than a few adults. Emily Oberman and team have created a new identity for The Roald Dahl Story Company Ltd that celebrates the wit and whimsy of this storytelling with imagination, creativity and most importantly, mischief. The system comes complete with a puckish and playful custom typeface called Fantastic Mr. Font. Home to the writer’s intellectual property, the Roald Dahl Story Company was acquired by Netflix in 2021 with the goal of bringing his stories and characters to more fans around the world in exciting new ways. The new identity builds on the brand idea, “We champion mischievous and inventive storytelling.” Dahl’s tales are known for embracing all sorts of tonal shifts––from warm and silly nonsense, to the dark and macabre, to biting humor and wordplay. The new logotype makes “Roald Dahl” and “Story Company” equally prominent, and is designed to carefully balance light and joy with darkness and mischief. About us
Our work encompasses graphics and identity, architecture and interiors, products and packaging, exhibitions and installations, websites and digital experiences, advertising and communications. Our 24 partners are all practicing designers, and whether they are working collaboratively or independently, they always do so in friendship. Our structure is unique. We are the only major design studio where the owners of the business are the creators of the work and serve as the primary contact for every client. This reflects our conviction that great design cannot happen without passion, intelligence and — above all — personal commitment, and is demonstrated by a portfolio that spans five decades and all industries.

SECOND HAND, the second title from Vernacular, the independent publisher co-founded by Pentagram partner Andrea A. Trabucco-Campos and alum Martin Azambuja is finally here! “Second Hand” is a new book by Jesse Reed, co-founder of Order (and another Pentagram alum), that documents a forgotten history of graphic design as captured in his snapshots of book covers found in used bookshops around the world. Rediscovered second-hand books are not just vessels of knowledge, but also windows into the past. These overlooked objects preserve the art of book cover design, often created by unsung heroes of the craft. To help catalog these largely forgotten works, Vernacular’s small research team developed an extensive digital archive with all the information they could unearth on each title (including Designer, Author, Publisher & Imprint, Year, Edition and Bookstore name/location). This index provides a comprehensive database for these crucial yet often unrecognized fragments of design history. Paula Scher and team have designed the identity and animations for Bookshop.org, an online retailer that helps support independent bookstores by sharing its sales revenue with local shops. The bookseller recently announced the launch of a new e-book platform that will enable users to download digital books, with profits from the sales going back to the indie sellers. The initiative has garnered positive coverage from Wired, NPR, Fast Company and The Verge. Paula Scher and team designed the identity, website and animations for Bookshop.org, including a logo that forms the letter “B” from a pair of books. The site is still in the works, but the bookseller launched a redesigned app featuring the animations, which use pairs of books to playfully illustrate different genres like romance, thrillers, sci-fi and humor. Pentagram’s Marina Willer and team have designed the exhibition graphics and film for the ‘Brasil! Brasil! The Birth of Modernism’, a major exhibition now open at London’s Royal Academy of Arts. Marina and team’s graphic approach uses super graphics to emphasise this bold and pioneering period in Brazilian art. The expressive logo forms the shape of the Brazilian flag through its typographic arrangement, reflecting the group’s intention to create a national identity through work that was both progressive and ahead of its time. Giorgia Lupi is featured in The Museum of Modern Art's new free online course, Artful Practices for Well-Being, where she brings her philosophy of data humanism to life. Giorgia provides the introduction to the course, sharing how she transforms everyday moments—like the time we check the clock or the rhythm of daily habits—into artistic data visualizations. What if data isn’t about what we know, but how we feel and who we want to become? By uncovering the human patterns hidden in the numbers, she reveals how data can be more than a tool—it can be a lens for empathy, creativity, and emotional connection. Netflix, one of the world’s leading entertainment services, is known for its staggering breadth of content. But within its impressive library lives a host of award-worthy original films and series created by top-tier talent. For more than five years, Emily Oberman and Luke Hayman have collaborated with Netflix to produce an editorial ecosystem with a mission to tell “the story behind the story” of these prestige titles. The streamer first engaged Pentagram in 2019 to design, name, and launch the inaugural issue of Queue journal. Since then, Pentagram and Netflix have partnered to publish 19 print editions of Queue (Issue 20 is expected to debut in the first half of 2025). Queue is a talent-first publication that strives to give each actor, director, artist, craftsperson, film or series to have its own spotlight moment. So, each issue takes the reader on an unexpected visual journey, moving from dramatic photography to dynamic typography, from interludes of quiet elegance to graphic statements and vibrant colors. Some compositions mimic or enhance the imagery; others let the photography breathe. Every article’s design echoes the story of the Netflix original title being featured. As a result, each issue is eclectic yet somehow cohesive. Read the full case study: https://lnkd.in/gazz9v4
